Hi,
I have an RV with a MotoSat F-1 and a dustyfoot tripod set-up.
Here is a chronology of my recent dealings with Hughes.

I recently set-up in Dickson TN and could not finish registration. I called Hughes tech support and they got the job done. I was a happy camper.

A week later I moved to Bowling Green. KY and had the same problem.
I called tech support again and was informed that if I was going to move frequently I would have to get an RV account. Then Hughes tech support gave me a phone number for Realtime Communications 903-986-2663. I called and was told, I would have to close my account with Hughes and make sure they released my 7000S modum, so it could be reused.

The next morning I closed my account with Hughes and then called Realtime to find out, how I would know when my modum would be released so I could subscribe to their service. I received a unsettling reply that I would have to buy another modum and they were not to sure of anything.

Any words of wisdom would be appreciated. rjstrid@yahoo.com

Yesterday I purchased an AT&T wireless hotspot, which is on a 14 day trial while I sort this out.

I was a Hughes customer since 2007 and I don't believe they are handling this situation well.

If you have an HN7000S (not a DW 7000) there is no reason they can't activate for you. I would suggest you try Mobilsat to see if they will activate for you.

There are a couple of things about this. First, it appears that Hughes is getting out of the Ku-Band business completely on a direct basis, turning everything over to VARs. Even Montana Satellite only has VAR stuff now.

The second is that, for years, a lot of us have been saying "Dont run registration when you move!!!!!" If there are people out there still doing it, stop doing it. Change the location in your modem (DSSatTool or other means) and then just use Antenna Pointing, or PC-OPI, or whatever. Registration has always had its problems, and now it has lead you to kill your account.

I'm not suggesting you may not be happy with cellular, but I will give you one other piece of advice: For those who travel a lot, 9 out of 10 will tell you Verizon, Verizon, Verizon, and only Verizon. Never AT&T. Sprint would fall between the two.

I have run into the locked modem problem before. By default, HughesNet would
lock a modem for the time until your next billing cycle begins plus 45 days
... this means that the modem will be locked between 45 and 75 days.

While it is locked, it cannot be commissioned. However, when the account is
closed, you can tell HughesNet to NOT LOCK the modem. I'm surprised they are
still locking the modems, since the purpose was to provide an easy pathway
to reactivating the account and clearly that is not a possibility any
longer, so they are effectively screwing their VARs if they continue to lock
the modems.

Be aware that any of the VARs will charge a minimum of $10 more per month,
which is for support, supposedly. And, RTC, Montana Satellite, and Mobilsat
require an 18-month contract. Montana Satellite also offers a month-to-month
option.

The only service plan available for the standard sized dish is the IA100,
which is the same as the old Pro plan, but RTC and Mobilsat charge $10 more
per month ($79.99) and with a daily allocation reduced back to 350 MB.
Montana charges $109.99 for the same plan with the contract, or $129.99 for
month-to-month.

You can purchase a new modem or wait until the modem unlocks ... at least
that's how it used to work.

Or, you can switch to StarBand, with plans costing $49.99, $69.99 or $99.99
per month, with a 2-year contract ... $10 more per month with a 1-year
contract.

Take care,

Barb

Is that new? As far as I know, everybody who has an account with them now has 425MB.

I remember when it was raised from 350 MB to 425 ... if you look at the
details of the IA100 plan, all three VARs say 350 MB ... though Montana has
a typo and says "per 4 hours" instead of per 24. ;-)

Take care,

Barb

rtc doesn't expose their plans and costs via a main site link. Do you have a link that works?

No, I was given the information via email, from an RTC employee. I'm trying
to piece together how this is going to work, going forward. ;-)

Take care,
