Some new Hughes info

Posted by: "Don Bradner" donb@arcatapet.com   donbradner

Tue Aug 23, 2011 8:18 am (PDT)

I posted the following a few days ago on DatastormUsers:
--------------
A couple of things: First, Hughes has started a forum for its users with company reps monitoring/answering. It can be found at http://community.myhughesnet.com/hughesnet

Second, for the past month a number of 9000 posters on BBR have reported seeing high speeds periodically, and some have found that those were "burst" speeds that would hold through several megabytes of download.

On the above-mentioned forum, Patrick (who has also posted on BBR under the user name Hughes Net) says this (note the 7000 part, of interest here):

"Recently, users of HN9000 systems may have noticed some changes to their download speeds - they're much faster! Hughes is pleased to announce that we have completed a network optimization which allowed us to give better performance to users on all service plans. A similar configuration change is being rolled out across users of HN7000S systems over the next month.

"Under the hood, we have tweaked our algorithms to allow users to take advantage of additional capacity and even burst to speeds above their service plan based on time of day and network loading. This additional speed is free and you don't have to do anything - just enjoy the improved performance!

"We are continuing to work on even more changes to give you a great experience. In the coming months, we will be rolling out another exciting network upgrade that will further boost download speeds."
--------------
Today there are a few members reporting increased speeds, both with the 7000S and the DW7000.

Thanks for this update. Now I have a question. If a person from
RVInternetBySatellite wants to ask a question where Hughes reps are present,
do we admit that we are moving our dishes? If it's better not to mention
that, I guess we will just stick with questions to this forum. However, the
other will be good to monitor, I think.

Thanks!

I would think this:

Questions that should be asked of Hughes reps should never be anything having to do with moving. If you need move-related questions, ask them here or DSU.

Therefore, no reason not to ask other types of questions on the Hughes forum.

Betty ...

I have been very honest with the Tier 4 reps & techs this past couple of weeks that I take my modem to my RV and on the road. Of course, the problem I'm having right now is at the stick house with download speeds at times in the wonderful double-digits ( read that to be 28-99 ) and my upload speeds have been consistent in the high 190's. I occasionally get a low 195-350. These speeds are always during the day, and always during the work-week. Early mornings/late evenings/weekends I can get consistently 1300- 1492 download and NO speeds lower than 720. The Service tech that came out had 2 years experience mostly with installs. We did find that I had moisture in the feed horn, and of course the Service Tech didn't have parts for the old Direcway dish ... however, I did , since I used to set up with a tri-pod. So we replaced the 'wet' feed horn with my spare ... with absolutely NO difference.

Tier 4 had the Service Tech try to move me to 4 different satellites but it wouldn't pass x-pol. I'm currently on SatMex5 1121/10, having been moved off of SatMex5 1130/33 the end of last month and when I started noticing the low download speeds. 'They' say I'm supposed to be on SatMex5 970/33 ... but again, couldn't pass x-pol. I really felt bad for the Service Tech being here over 5 hours with Tier 4 keep changing their minds on where they wanted him to point. Having been a IBM Hardware CE & Software Engineer I have 'been there-done that' with taking a call that lasted much longer than expected with the end result being the same. Tier 4 knows my history as well as the Service Tech. Had to chuckle when the tech said I 'wasn't the typical end-user' ... Unfortunately for the Service Tech he had two other appointments for installs and one ended up canceling because he couldn't get there.

The latest is 'they' think that I have too old a dish ( Direcway ) to support getting the x-pol to pass on anything but what I'm on. I think that 'they' have a huge congestion problem on their end and I'm only the squeaky wheel. I don't want to be moved off of SatMex5 since the property we have in Oregon I know I can get the Satellite there, AND I have a BOW which I use when out and about with the RV. I can't use the BOW at our property in Oregon because of a row of trees. I told them that I would do a good test the next couple of weeks when we're in the RV ... if I get good download speeds during the day on week days in the RV, then I'll consider putting in a newer dish

Anyway ... I'm straight up with them that I take it off site ... that I have been pointing my dish for several years on the tri-pod before getting the Datastorm system. I'll NOT go to the 9000 ... and I prefer to stay on SatMex5. If they complain about me moving the modem, then I'll go with a VAR. Right now I'm on the Pro plan .. they are getting the $ directly from me and we've had satellite service since the days of DirecPC around '96. If I go with a VAR, it will cost me the same for a non-PRO plan and Hughes will get less $.
