Warning about Hughesnet phishing email

Posted by: "Terry Cannon" Terry@rovinginternet.com

Wed Aug 24, 2011 7:35 am (PDT)

I just received an email purportedly from Hughesnet Member Services that
looked very good. It was recommending that the email recipient sign up for
auto withdrawal of their bill from their bank account and receive 3 tokens
free.

The big tell on this email (actually there's three). First, I'm not a
Hughesnet subscriber and second, you cannot have a Hughesnet account without
having your monthly bill go to a credit card in the first place.

Last but not least: NEVER EVER consider following a link that wants your
bank, credit card, or login information for anything!

Fw: Your mailbox has exceeded one or more size limits

I sent this to abuse@hughes.net. I've been receiving quite a few similar
messages from a "Hughes Administrator" lately. Has anyone else, or am I just
the spam target?

That is good to send in.
On another topic where there appeared to be a phishing scheme related to
Hughes tokens, it appears that this e-mail was legitimate (but stupid).

The promotion is available to customers who choose to pay by Electronic
Check from your bank account (as opposed to credit card). You can confirm
that you're eligible and sign up (here).
To confirm you are eligible please go to <https://sf1.hns.com/echeck/>
https://sf1.hns.com/echeck/ (this link will be available on our
<http://customercare.myhughesnet.com/> customer care page
shortly). You may also view this video for a more in depth explanation of
our Fair Access Policy and the best way to use Restore Tokens.
I hope this has been helpful. Please let us know if you have any follow up
questions.
Thanks, Sara

These are Hughesnet employees responding to posts and my suggestion that it
might be a phishing scheme.

I've received several emails lately that are definately spam, as their link doesn't go directly to Hughes. In the last couple of cases they are talking about going to Webmail to resolve a email problem. You can tell my 'mousing-over' the link. I just delete them.

Normally I would say "show me the message headers" but in this case I can see immediately that if you click the link it will take you to ucoz.com. They are a "free" webhosting site that many say are scammers themselves, and they host a lot of scams.

Interesting that they would send that to me when I'm not a subscriber.

Thanks, Don and Others,

When I send anything to "Abuse," I do click on properties>details and copy
and send the entire path. The message clearly did not come from Customer
Care or Hughes Admin. It does seem that I've had more than the usual spams
via Hughes lately. In the past, they have been quite rare.

A continuation of more spams may be a good discussion topic for that new
group.
