Don't forget about "the other guys"!

StarBand is also an option and you can get your installer certification so
it's OK to move your dish!

Thanks..forgive me for ranting. I am SO mobile that I am VERY often in
places with NO cell service. So Hughes is what I have...

Larry,

StarBand has a weekly, rather than a daily allowance. This means one big
update from Microsoft won't get you throttled.

Here's a link to the allocations and the recovery speeds for the different
service plans, with a side-by-side comparisons:

http://www.mobileinternetsatellite.com/Products/MIS_Satellite_Comparison.cfm
?expandable=1

I know these are the old HughesNet numbers, so if someone can send me the
new numbers or a link to where they are all posted, I will update our web
site.

The StarBand numbers aren't quite as generous as the HughesNet numbers, but
the free download period goes from midnight to 6 am each day, so that helps.

Take care,

Barb

That is what is says on the StarBand web site, but the solution is free
installer certification.

It is then OK with StarBand for mobile users to move their equipment, but
they need to read some information and a take a free exam (open book), so
the user is aware of the important issues in pointing the dish.

It can be mounted on the roof or used on a tripod. As Terry already said,
his neighbor has what he calls "StarStorm" .. a StarBand dish on a Datastorm
controller.

There is also a new company started by the same guys who started Motosat.
They are developing a new controller that will work on both StarBand and
HughesNet.

Take care,

Barb

To StarBand it means you must get your installer certification and you can
then move your equipment.

What on earth does "the installation must be performed with
exact precision and in accordance with FCC standards" mean.
Doesn't any transmitter within certain watts has to meet FCC to
parameters. Wouldn't the parameters be the same for Starband
and Service on Hughes??

I have seen a number of mobile Starband users out there in RVs.

Can I mount a StarBand antenna on my RV?

Not at this time. The StarBand antenna not only receives from but also
transmits to the satellite; the installation must be performed with
exact precision and in accordance with FCC standards.

There are very few differences between StarBand and HughesNet, in terms of
the technology. They both transmit and receive in the Ku band, which means
the footprint covers the better part of entire continents, rather than
spot-beamed Ka band services, which cannot be moved without NOC assistance.

One technical difference is that StarBand transponders are autoranging,
which mean that you don't need to tell the modem where it is, to establish
synchronization with the satellite and the NOC. This means there are no
inside tasks, other than powering on the modem.

Other non-technical differences include tech support in the US vs Pakistan
or Phillipines and the fact that you can get installer certification.

Service plan differences can be directly compared via the link I sent
earlier.

How are they different? Just how can Starband work on an RV?

Skip,

You are correct ... it is a support issue.

StarBand's position is that the dealer is the first line of support for
mobility issues. If it appears to be an equipment issue, StarBand tech
support will work with the mobile user directly ... as long as they have
their installer ID.

Most folks understand that Starband and Hughes do not support service
on RVs. That doesn't mean it won't work, however.

The companies don't want to get into the costly customer service support
that comes with so many less knowledgeable mobile users. Their business
model is for the fixed user where one time set up is all that is needed.
They
use local contracted service techs tom support this plan. The number of
RVers aren't enough to take on that burden to make it worthwhile. As a
result they take the position that RVs aren't supported.

Direct TV and Dish TV went through this years back as I recall.

On the other hand, some VARs support helping RVers. DataStorm took on
this challenge to get their expensive auto-seek product into the market.
They
also seem to understand that many folks are quite capable of setting up
their
own equipment and will activate modems. Other VARs will also activate
modems for those wanting to do their own mobile set up.

This forum really helps those willing to delve into their own set up.

So... "It's not so much what the General says as it is what the General
means"
.... :-))

It is also (roughly) what Hughes says. Both mean "this is what we say, but there is no enforcement."

There is little public discussion of mobile Starband, so I don't know how it has changed over the years. I would guess that at least 99% of the mobile dishes you see use Hughes. It is simple to do, and there is a lot of peer support. There used to be a lot of dealer support, but not so much any more. Starband has very little peer support, but has dealer support at least from Barb Nolley and Terry Cannon.

Actually, there was a lot of activity on the various StarBand and other
(peer) support forums while the migration to 121 W/Echostar 9 was in
progress.

But since then, things have calmed down and there have been relatively few
problems, hence little activity.
