Ministry of IT, Government of Pakistan, has been working on the development of IDN ccTLD registry for Pakistan. In this context, the application for .PAKISTAN from the ministry has been approved by ICANN (http://www.icann.org/en/resources/idn/fast-track/string-evaluation-completion) and the delegation process is now underway, including the specification of the ccTLD structure, policies and manager. There is considerable work being done in this area nationally and internationally. History of the work in the national context is available at http://www.cle.org.pk/IDN/, which includes the first introductory workshop, second workshop for finalizing the IDN ccTLD string and other relevant matters for application and a follow up workshop of language and technology experts to finalize the language table for Pakistani languages. Additional work continues at ICANN (http://www.icann.org/en/resources/idn).

Formation of .PAKISTAN registry will enable Pakistanis to register for domain names in their own languages instead of just the ASCII English option which exists today. Establishing IDN ccTLD will promote development and deployment of content in local languages.

This workshop provides public forum to give feedback on policy issues relating to the IDN ccTLD for Pakistan. For those who are not able to attend in person, an online survey form has also been made available for submitting feedback by 19th April, 2012, at http://www.cle.org.pk/IDN/idn2012/. The meeting will finalize relevant policy issues, including the following:

a. Domain registration requirements
b. Registry governance, business and regulatory model
c. Registry operational policies

The response from the public will be collated and presented to MoIT, GoP as recommendations for the policy of IDN ccTLD.

Please confirm your participation in the meeting in Lahore by emailing to waqar.azeem@kics.edu.pk.

Regards,
Sarmad
