suspending service

We are sitting in one spot for now, our phone has good service here, we all ready had some data on it and for $30 more a month we have 5 GB of data. That is enough for our needs and it seems to be working good, faster than Hughes too. So I decided to drop Hughes for a while, maybe 3 months or could be a year. They will only put the system on "vacation" for up to 6 months in a 12 month period. They say if I just discontinue my service indefinitely I will have to pay some sort of "new account" fees, have an installer come out and have a new 2 year contract to restart the service. I have had the H7000s since they came out (even have a spare) nothing owed against them, as far as they know the dish is installed permanently in one location. Did I just talk to the wrong person?

Roger, I think that is correct as far as Hughes-direct service policies have always been for suspensions.

I can think of three courses of action:

1. suspend for 6 months only and then pay for the next 6. Not good if you don't need it for a year.

2. cancel service and decide what to do when you next need service. I would probably choose this one, and plan on using Montana Satellite to start new service without a contract. It is only a bad idea of Montana goes away, which I can't predict. There would be a startup fee, but probably not excessive.

3. Call RTC and see what their policies are for a mobile account. Their monthly would be Pro service only, at $10 more than Hughes, but if they offer unlimited suspensions it could be a good deal. I don't know their policy, so that's why I'm saying call to find out.

Roger,

I think you just spoke with someone who was getting compensated for keeping
people from disconnecting their service.

Let me start with a caveat: It has been quite a few months since I set up a
Hughesnet account for a used modem, but the last time I did, the subscriber
had to pay me a small fee for my time, + $25 "activation fee" from Hughesnt
and the subscriber was then on a "month to month" basis with no contract.
The subscriber was even allowed to pick the satellite they wanted to use.

It was quite simple to do, although you do need an active Hughesnet dealer
to work through to set up the account. I would bet that Montana Satellite
probably can do it, but I don't know for sure.

The other option is to contact mobileinternetsatellite.com when you are ready to set up a new account. We do charge a setup fee, which includes commissioning assistance, as needed. The dealer we work with also charges a $50 fee and HughesNet charges $25.

But, there is no contract and you can pick the satellite you want.

OK Thanks, Don, Terry and Barb. In 6 months I will probably know whether we will be going south next winter or not. If I don't let them know differently they are to restart service Oct. 27. Will reevaluate in Oct.
