Hughes Setup with Windows 8

Posted by: "Dick Tracy" billdavis539@gmail.com   dick.tracy47

Sun Apr 29, 2012 8:36 am (PDT)

Just a heads up on the next release of Windows. I have been testing Windows 8 Beta and after moving and setting up my DW7000S I hit a roadblock. After running DSS Sat Tool I tried to use PC Opi and got changing readings bouncing all over the scale from 0 to 60. Also no sound. I decided to try the hughes pointing software and got the same symptom.

I left the dish pointed where I got the highest reading when bouncing around and quit for the night. After a couple of hours my wife was on the internet using the Hughes connection. I checked the modem and found all lights on except the system light. I connected to 192.168.0.1 and the modem was awaiting on setup to complete.

I have been pointing Hughes for over 15 years and never was able to access the web until all five lights were on. This time I was able to. We used the system for two days although upload was very slow the download speeds were good.

I reinstalled Windows 7 and completed setup and got all lights immediately.

Just wanted to alert Don.

Happy surfing,

Bill Davis

PS I dislike Window 8 very much. It is designed for mobil products with touch screens and is difficult to use with a mouse. The start button is removed from the lower left corner and moved to the home screen with colored ribbons. I will keep Windows 7.

Hughes Problems?

Is anyone besides me unable to access many web pages? I have had this
problem since yesterday and NO ONE at Motosat has returned my call. Have
they discontinued weekend tech support? I can access one of my bank
accounts, but not the others. I cannot access ebay and many other
websites, not even my OWN website! I keep getting this message:

I have never in the 7 years with hughes experienced anything like this.

Evidently yahoo groups does not accept small images. This is the
message I get:

> The page isn't redirecting properly
> Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for
> this address in a way that will never complete.
> This problem can sometimes be caused by disabling or refusing to
> accept cookies.

I cannot even access datastormusers with Internet Explorer. Nor does
Google Earth load.

MotoSAT discontinued weekend tech support many moons ago. I know, I know,
they say that if you leave your SAN info, etc. they will get back to you but
it's really just a call forwarded to a tech on a cell phone on his day off.

MotoSAT still handles all hardware related tech. support issues (the antenna
won't go up and down or won't lock on) and RTC will be handling all Hughes
related issues (you are locked onto the correct satellite with a good signal
but not good service). If you "were" a MotoSAT customer (paying MotoSAT
$79.99/month for your internet service) you need to immediately contact RTC
in Kilgore, TX. You have not paid for your service since the first of Jan
and you now owe for Feb, March and April. MotoSAT has not provided any
billing info to RTC since Hughes took the VAR service away from them and
your service is in jeopardy of being shut down. If you do nothing you will
lose your service. If you call RTC, they will be able to fix what Motosat
screwed up.

RTC is the company that Hughes assigned the previous MotoSAT accounts to
after they removed MotoSAT as a VAR. See my other post for additional
information.

I NEED CONTACT INFORMATION NOW! I run my business on the internet.
This is critical!!!

What kind of slovenly mis-management is this? NO notice! I have
contacted Motosat since January first and NO ONE said anything!

Motosat is a skeleton of what they once were. Hughes pulled their VAR status at the first of the year and passed to RTC (Real Time Communications). Unfortunately, no billing info was given to RTC, and much of the other information they were given like e-mail addresses were wrong. Motosat passed them an excel spreadsheet with names and serial numbers and SANs, and not much else. We've been talking this up in the Datastorm forums for 3 months, and it was discussed in multiple messages here in they Yahoo forum on February 12th and 13th.

Hughes has now stepped in and put up a page for all those affected, but they apparently screwed up the page so some browsers go into a redirect loop. For those browsers that do not, here is what the page was supposed to tell you:
------------------
Help us avoid Internet access termination on your mobile account.
Internet access using the HughesNet service is no longer available from MotoSat.
Your HughesNet account may be continued at the exact same charges and billing arrangements by contacting:

Real Time Communications, LLC
900 South Commerce St.
Kilgore, Texas 75662
(903) 986-2663

Billing authorization and details must be provided by you as the end user. Account information, credit card authorization and expiration dates are required to avoid an interruption in Service. Without this information, your account will be suspended and Internet access will be nonfunctional. Please call (877) 789-4323 toll free for billing details, as well as any questions you may have.

A large number of HughesNet mobile customers have already called in. If you have not done so, your Service will be interrupted within approximately three days.

This can be a very smooth transition and we are here to assist you in any way we can. Thank you for helping us avoid this interruption on your account.

A further note on this issue: Hughes is putting the info page up using their proxy. As a result, it only affects http. You can still get to https sites (like banks) and you can still get e-mail.

If you need emergency access to http sites before you can contact RTC tomorrow, you can do so by killing the proxy. That is something that can only be done temporarily, and will do no harm, as the proxy will come back on its own.

To kill the proxy:

Browse to the "HN7x00S Advanced Configuration and Statistics" page and click on the Turbo Page Configuration link on the left side. Then click on the "Advanced Cfg". The page says that the "Turbo Page Advanced Configuration is disabled", but you'll still be able to set up bypass mode. Put a dot next to "Use Turbo Page Server configured below", enter a "bogus" server IP address such as 10.10.10.10 (any address in the Private IP address range will do), port 86, and press the "Teardown TurboPage Connection" button. The unit will try to connect to the bogus server the next time you start browsing to sites on the internet. The Event Logs accessible on the "DW7000 Advanced Configuration and Statistics" page will show that the DW7000 attempts to connect 3 times, fails 3 times, and then goes into bypass mode (a straight TCP connection). This takes about 35 - 45 seconds from the first connection attempt to finally going into bypass mode, so there's a 35 - 45 second lag on the initial browsing attempt to a Web site on the internet.

Relax. Take a deep breath. No one here is "the bad guy" (there really is
not a bad guy here) but there are a lot of people here willing to help. You
have been given the necessary contact information. If you call RTC and
update your billing information they will charge you for the missed billings
of Feb., March and April and they will also ensure that your Hughes service
continues on without interruption.

Got it. I called, they will return my call in the AM. I am headed to a
big competition where my internet access is CRITICAL. So if I am back
online normally again by Tuesday I will be fine. This was just such a
shock! MANY sites I cannot access, but hopefully tomorrow.....

There was notice put out months ago on this change. It was mentioned on this
forum as well. I contacted RTC back then to get the procedure for when I
reactivated my service for the summer about a week before RTC took the
reins administratively. Not long after that I got a letter from them
confirming
I can reactivate for the small legacy fee and not the "new" customer higher
fee.

I NEED CONTACT INFORMATION NOW! I run my business on the
internet. This is critical!!!

What kind of slovenly mis-management is this? NO notice! I have contacted
Motosat since January first and NO ONE said anything!

Teddy,
If you go back to message 22984 (Feb 12, 2012), the first mention of this change to RTC was brought up in this group. Motosat sent out a notice (via email) that got to some of their customers (on Feb 10th, I believe, as I also didn’t get it from them). A copy of that notice is posted on Datastormusers in mid February. After calling RTC, I discovered Motosat didn’t have my current email address, so I updated RTC and gave them my payment information. Good people to deal with, but RTC is a small company with only a handful of employees.

DSLocator, etc.

I changed the subject line, since this is getting away from the Hughes issue, and does NOT have anything to do with the VAR change.

DSLocator was written by a DSU member that hasn't been around in years. It relied on Internet Explorer cookies that it was no longer able to access beginning around IE version 7. Since the author is gone, that program is unusable for most people.

Using the Map Form at DatastormUsers has always been possible, and it works with ALL browsers, PC or Mac.

Several years ago I wrote another program that uses an alternate method of Login/Password, and that works perfectly for PC users. It is called DSMapSubmit, and is downloadable from the DSU articles section. You would need to use the Map Form one time in order to setup the login/password that you would use.

I have also written an Android app that can be used to update position.

Sorry, I do not keep old emails for very long (and I do not do
webmail.) I get 100's every day and do not have time to read
everything. Now, if they sent a notice via US Mail (which I get very
little of) I would have known. No time to deal with the Datastorm
forums unless I am looking for something specific. Too cumbersome.
Frankly, I have called Motosat several times since then and NO ONE
mentioned ANYTHING about this change. That last time was about a month
ago. Hopefully we are all better off. I usually like and can work well
with small companies. Just glad all of you are there and that now I
have a solution!

I gave up. Perhaps I will go back and try again. I do like and need to
let others know where I am!

president, Ronald Reagan: "I will not make age an issue of this
campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my
opponent's youth and inexperience."
