Nice to see mutual agreements upon single opinion on 'industry-academic relationship'. More importantly people over here not only proposing solutions rather presenting their efforts, this is truly right directions of positive minds.
As I remember I shared previously in some thread about my experience at UCLA RIPS internship program. What I experienced in my last ten years in academia there are following kind of efforts happening locally to connect industry-academy, however have some basic problems in that:
-- industry like suparco or others are visiting universities and trying to outsource there problems to final year projects to undergraduate students.
--internship program almost present in every university
-- seminars from industry in academia to fill gap or so
There are two questions over here, are we satisfied with the current direction of our Software industry I mean whether our software industry is fully capitalizing the available talents in targeting 'big products' I am personally not convinced with it, however, its a seperate discussion need to disscuss in details, problems and solutions.
The second question is, why in presence of the three points(mentioned above) industry-academic gap could not filled yet? many reasons are there, however RIPS experience of Industrial Internship is following:
what they do is IPAM (Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics) contact big companies like Jet propulsion labs, Pixar, Boeing, Symentec, IBM etc and ask for their industrial problems. Along with the problem statement they also ask industrial mentor from the industry with work plan too. Later on they float call for academic mentor for such projects finally ask students participation.
Finally the program at the work place of IPAM, its fully funded (NSF, Industry) good pay to faculty and stipend to students, this cross cultivation of ideas nurture future leaders. RIPS program does not leave the problem to be solved on faculty or student, however, they make complete plan and weak wise deliverable for them (which some how guarantees the desired results)

If any one would like to proceed in similar direction, I will be always ready for any help

there is lack of Industry-Academia relations in Pakistan, that's true no one cay deny over it but at same time some of Universities like where i am studying Sukkur IBA Computer Science Department doing his best by offering study trip to Industries yearly along with that some Industries like we had a recent visit to different IT Industries at lahore doing their best by providing such informative knowledge about current trends and tactics in IT specially i would like to name few of them like Corvit Networks and GameView Studio. The purpose of sharing this knowledge with you all is to motivate other institutes and industries to do their best by providing such opportunities to students with core Industry-Academia relation
