[pakgrid] [Suggestion] 74 PhD Positions in ICT @ University of Trento, Italy

Dear Prospective PhD students,

I have been posting these PhD opportunities from University of Trento, Italy to various Pakistani groups for last two years. There is a good news and a bad news!

Good news is that  Pakistanis are comprised of 40% of the total applicants across the globe (which is a HUGE proportion)!
Bad news is that only very few students are actually successful in securing the PhD scholarship

Pakistanis have tendency to send a "half-baked" application which is just another application without a thorough profiling of the professor or the research group. In my very humble opinion, I suggest the following:

- Before the formal application deadline ( May 15, 2012), please send an email to the professor or scientist whom you consider most relevant to your research interests.
Show your genuine interest in his work (probably specifically identifying which of his work really attracted you and why VERY VERY briefly) and highlighting your profile in a way that it coincides with his interests. Enclose your CV and transcripts with a cover letter in the email. Obviously don't fake it!! After this informal contact, you would know if there are good odds of getting a PhD position with that professor based on his response.

- If you receive a negative, neutral or no reply, it is worth spending some time to look for another professor. BTW no reply from a professor does not mean NO. It usually just mean that he is very busy these days.

- Then formally apply before May 15 with ALL the requisite documents!! .. deadline is very strict!

Good Luck!
Usman
