Teddy:
I know what you mean by needing the service where you travel. We too go to endurance rides way out in the boon docks and have the hughes service so I can upload photos from the ride site. We found in the last year that a cell phone booster from the Wilson company in St George Utah really helped us get a data connection where others did not have service. We use Verizon and there have only been a couple of places where we have not been able to get service. It works so well that we bought a BIG booster for our house here in Idaho and we have cell service and our neighbors do not. This includes a 3G signal. You might look into a booster if you have not purchased one yet, they are simple to set up and you can even buy directional ant. to bring the signal in even stronger. Hope this helps, we are going to suspend hughes for now and run off our Verizon system

We have the 70db model from Wilson cell store in Utah. It was pricy at $700.00 but I have a directional ant mounted on top of the house and without it we would get no service at all. The down side to these high power amplifiers is you have to have enough distance between the outside ant and the amplifier or it will create a large amount of feedback, or so the techs told me. Anyway we were paying the phone company $70.00 a month for there crappy service so figured this would pay for itself in 10 months or so.

Teddy, we bought some "extras" with our mobile booster so we were in to it for $300.00. I got a better ant. and we opted for the optional cradle ant for the inside of the vehicle. It makes it pretty much hands free for our smart phones. Hope this answers your questions, I called in to suspend our hughes net service as we are headed south after T-day. Guess we will see if we can live without the head ache.

Thanks. I'll look into it this winter. I have some buddies that
understand these kind of set-ups and I'll work with them. I am SO
pissed at Hughes. Hard to recoup any "investment" at this stage of the
game.... But I am also not a big fan of Verizon (although I am a
customer - better coverage most places I go, but still far from ideal.)

Nice to see some action on the group but.  How is this related to SATELLITE INTERNET?  Cell phones, cell phone plans, cell phone boosters and all cell phone stuff not related to satellite internet is "off topic" for this group.  There are cell phone groups that this sort of stuff is discussed.

Not picking on anyone in particular but those posting off topic will get put on moderation.

Thanks
Roger

Well, I suppose many of us are having frustrating times with Hughes and
they do not seem to be getting better. Without real solutions I, for
one, certainly appreciate hearing about alternatives. If we could really
solve our Hughes issues, these conversations would probably not occur.

I too am frustrated with the challenges using satellite internet, in fact I canceled my service after 7 years of full time use.  With cell phone coverage getting better I think for most of us there are better options now.  I have better options at this time.  I will however probably want to use satellite internet again when we get back on the road.  We really like to spend time in places that have no other option if we want to get online.   But rather than transition this group to an open discussion of the other options I would like to keep it focused on the original intent of the group as stated on the home page.  This way those that want to use this group as intended don't have to wade through a lot of off topic stuff to find the information they are looking for.  We would also loose the help of some of the folks that have the answers to the satellite questions if we don't keep the group focused and on topic.

Thanks for your understanding on this issue.

I am in the same boat. I have loved this system, even with it's
shortcomings and cannot envision going strictly to a cell phone. What
we need is someone with enough money, expertise or clout to help us all
come up with solutions for what we have. I, for one, am not yet willing
to give up on what I have.

I've been trying to sell my XF-3 for awhile with no luck using traditional pricing, so I am going to try something different: An auction.

Rules for the auction:
$5 minimum bid, no reserve
$5 bid increments
30 day auction, ending 8pm PST on Thursday, Dec 13th
Payment due at auction end
Buyer must arrange pickup in Austin, Texas
Bids accepted either by posting in my thread at datastormusers, or by e-mail to me. In the latter case I will post to the thread, and name the bidder or leave it anonymous at their choice.

Who knows, you might get a dish for $5!

This is a 1.2-meter XF-3 with 4-watt transmitter. Includes base plate, control cable, J-1 controller, iDirect 3100 modem. Note that, if you are purchasing for new service, the provider may require a modem upgrade.

Dish was working when removed from our coach 3 weeks ago. It is stored at Michael Day's place in Austin, as we are now back in California.
