Hi all,

I have both HD Dish TV and F3 Internet antennas. They are roof mounted. I use HughesNet for ISP.

Assumptions
I understand from other threads that MotoSat is moving and the business may or may not be having some issues.
The HughesNet is too slow for my needs now.
That HughesNet has a new wiz-bang High Speed antenna and modem.
I use VPN to get to customers systems.

My questions:
1.Any thoughts on the new offering from Hughes? Would it's speeds be similar to a High Speed line? Obviously, up and down speeds will vary greatly, but is it as "advertised"?

2. If I wanted to stay with MotoSat to utilize the new Hughes system. Has anyone heard if they are going to sell a antenna that will work with the HughesNet?
When I spoke to HughesNet Customer Service I felt that I was teaching them instead of listening to a person who could answer my questions. The only answer I could get from CS was the antenna's physical description is "round" not oval. Any one know?

3. I think to retrofit the F3 I would need a different head? Certainly a modem from HughesNet and a new chip or firmware upgrade for the D3 and it sounds like a new screen.
Hughes is offering free equipment, so I am thinking I could change out the head or bow/head if necessary, the modem of course and then I am left with the D3 to locate the sat. This is where I get a bit crazy.
Would I need to change anything on the F3 & D3?

Is there communication protocol which the D3 might not understand?
Does the "round" screen receive better or transmit faster?
If MotoSat upgrades firmware or software would it include HughesNet new "sat"?

Do I want to do this at all?
I have 2 different mifi's from Verizon. A 3G & 4G both have their issues, mainly about holding a constant connection. My wireless connections jump around constantly do to the Marine air traffic at Mira Mar. I can work on the park's TengoNet, but that feels dangerous.

So if it's not too much to ask if you know any or all of these questions I would really like to know if my thinking is flawed or what I haven't thought of. Didn't MotoSat make a F4 antenna that was round?

Don't kill me, I do software (40+ years, yea I am oldie....), not hardware (I have just enough knowledge to be dangerous or wildly stupid).

Thanks to all,

Deborah

To retrofit the F3 for the new satellite would require a new dish (not available), new arm and tria (not available), new controller (not available), and most importantly a service that Hughes does NOT offer, nor have they suggested they ever will.

In other words, no-can-do. This is spot-beamed Ka, and Hughes has never allowed their Ka services to hop beams.

Exede, the similar service from ViaSat (successor to WildBlue) does offer commercial service that can be moved. It is very expensive. There is one company making an automatic dish (C-ComSat) for Exede that is quite a bit more than your F3 was originally, and ViaSat sells a "flyaway" suitcase kit to the military for about $20,000.

There is at least one individual who has gone through Exede installer school and has an Exede setup on tripod. They claim they can change locations by e-mailing the new one (presumably before they move). There is a discussion and pictures at http://www.datastormusers.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?/ubb/get_topic/f/4/t/001924.html

I have been "lurking" on this site for a long time learning what I can when I can from everyone on this list. I have never asked a tech question but thought I would see what others have found out about this. We are considering putting our Hughes Net service on suspension while we go south for the winter. Our "smart" phones will keep us connected but I am wondering about the hughes net email addresses we have. Will they still be valid or do we need to go to a Gmail account? I think I saw in an earlier post that as long as the account isn't cancelled and on suspension only the email stays active, correct?

Thanks to everyone for keeping us Non-Tech types well informed...

You can still get email through Hughesnet. We have ours on suspension, and have not had any problems.

Steve,
Your Hughes email will be suspended as well, I would suspect. Another good reason to not use your ISP for your email service. Switch to Gmail....
