We arrived in Death Valley yesterday and set up our Hughes system but couldn't get online. Only 2 lights. Couldn't get a lock on our satellite (89W). Rechecked all coordinates, cables, undid and redid everything. Still nothing.
As we're sitting there wondering what could be wrong, Gerry decided to check the compass with a spare one we have. Imagine our surprise to find that the one we'd been successfully using for many years was off by 40 degrees! Who'da thunk?!? Just one more item to check when things ain't workin'

Sally,
Glad you escaped the north! We will be staying in WA another winter, miss seeing all our winter friends and the deserts.
When I park the bus I usually try to point it east or northeast but when I put the dish up on top I can swing it 180 degrees (or all the way around) to find the satellite. Just need to have a level post so the elevation stays the same all the way around. When using a tripod I have to make sure the rig is not in the way but still don't pay too much attention to the direction, just get that post level so I can sweep the sky. I don't get turned around easily, usually know where to expect the sun to come up and know the dish needs to be pointed south of that.
Have a great winter season!

Sounds like you have a great system, Roger. And enough batteries to run all day and all night. Lucky guy :-)
