Possibly, but it doesn't look like it. It seems to be back to normal
today......fairly consistent with access and signal, although still not
super-fast. Perhaps our speed in normal for the Professional monthly fee.

BTW, have most of you seen this? Although this is an RVinternet by satellite
group, you may be interested in this latest report..... I guess we are
better off than we think as long as we can at least have Hughes.net
connections!

"Welcome to America, the country with the 25th fastest Internet service in
the world, just behind Romania, and falling fast. The culprit? Hard to say,
but maybe it's got something to do with the FCC's abolition of any sort of
competitive markets for Internet service in the USA?"

Actually, I researched beyond that -- the blog happens to be briefer and to

True, although "facts" are hard to come by and different sources will have different rankings. They apparently think that Romania is number 24 in the world.

Take a look at some objective data from Ookla, which runs speed test sites around the world:
http://www.netindex.com/download/allcountries/

According to them, Romania is actually 5th in the world, one of the fastest. The US is 32nd in the Ookla list.

Note that all countries in the top 20 are geographically small. No country with a really large area makes it into the top 30.

Very good, Don. Yes, I also have considered the size, but knowing our
individual state governments, it would seem that we as states *could* be a
bit higher. So much for that......I'm glad we have access to Hughes!

Canada which still regulates internet is one below you.... Dereg should
actually increase speed as ISP's fight for customers..

Maybe you should take a second look. I have seen my service diminish
greatly in the past 6 years. So exactly what would you attribute that
to besides the fact that the corporate entities have BOUGHT their rights
to overcharge with no guarantee for the expected service?

Keep in mind that the average in the US is 9Mbps - if even 1% of US users had to use satellite it would pull it down a lot! something to keep this a little on topic :)

In practice, the only way to achieve what the high end countries have is fiber to the home. It is very slowly happening in the US. If the govt wanted to spend a few hundred billion or so it could cover most in just a few years - anybody want to recommend that the government spend a few hundred billion? The companies that are selling the service are only going to spend the bucks where there is a high concentration of users, meaning a tiny part of the US land area.

It's doing it again

I moved my system from Long beach, Washington to Monroe, WA off about 6
hours. I set up and got a signal of 78 and was unable to X-pole. I found
two questionable fittings and changes them and then even tried changing
wires but no luck. At the last setup I did not have any extensions in the
wiring. Now all it will do is say it is trying to do ACP. And it just sits
there.

Does anyone have a suggestion? I have been so lucky as to have no problems
for so long that I do not remember anything else to do. I purchased an air
card today.

It seems the same question will come up again and again, from poster to
poster, but why are you doing a cross-pol????

Yes. There appear to be two types of tripod users: 1) those who have been bitten by failure to cross-pol, and so have stopped doing cross-pols, and 2) those who have not previously had a problem and so assume they will never have a problem cross-polling. Often they were taught (incorrectly) that a cross-pol had to be done, so they do it until it doesn't work.

Sooner or later failure bites just about everybody, due to the poor nature of the Hughes cross-pol servers.

I had been one of those who wanted to complete cross pol for about five
years experiencing marginal and frustrating results.

This past summer, using Don's advice, I skipped it and life was good!!! ;-))
On occasion I did do a Forced Ranging.

We thought passing cross pol was necessary to connect when the dish is
moved. However, this last move, we did pass cross poll with only a 59, but
our signal strength has been anywhere from 48 to 51.

Hmmmmm, so you just set it up, get the best signal possible and start using?

Just to be clear:

A cross-pol IS necessary when the dish is moved.

BUT the modem will cross-pol on its own if you do nothing, and it uses a different process that uses servers that are always working, and has a lower threshold to pass.

So, the process is: Use a plumb mast, make sure skew is correctly set, point the dish, and forget about anything else. DON'T manually cross-pol!!!!!!!!

•      D3-Router Problems

I posted this on DataStorm users awhile back but have not fixed it due to not wanting to lose my internet and TV and would not be able to get any help and the problem has gotten worse so it is time to do it before moving the rig and not being able to get back on! Now I have to keep rebooting to get online and I cannot get to my D3 information to see what is going on. My Equipment is F1 Dish, D3 Controller 192.168.1.250, HN 7000s Modem 192.168.0.1 and 2-Linksys WRT54G Routers one is for the Internet Access 192.168.2.1 and one is for Internal Access 192.168.1.1 with external Antenna (Routers set up by my son) system is labeled with address's and I have a info print out and it has been working for 5 years but I think it is time to replace the old Routers with one new Router. What Router should I purchase that I could use the antenna on or do I need the antenna for my neighbor to get on to my internet and my 2 Laptop's and later my wireless printer. Also would appreciate step by step on how to hook it up and put in my SSID and Password as I know the instructions will not include the D3 and I might not be able to get back on-line!!! Thanks in advance for your help and sorry it is so long.

Thanks

Interesting connection pattern

Now we have another problem. Our modem lights are going from 3 to 5 and back to 3 fairly regularly. What is peculiar is that the modem 7000S may show a steady 5 lights, but as soon as I click to either send or receive a signal it immediately goes to 3 lights.

It has been doing that regularly enough that when downloading e-mail, it "disconnects" before it finishes and I get multiple copies of the same messages.

I have warm and cold booted, completely unplugged everything and then replugged, and when we are connected we still get a signal of about 45 with off and on (3 & 5 lights) connectivity.
