Walaikumassalam,
I guess we need to revise the primary intention of a PhD.
Probably apart from Pakistan the first priority and goal after obtaining a PhD is to get a tenured teaching position at a good / any University. Even for being a researcher, a university is the primary place where often industry grants are given to professors.
There always are relatively few opportunities (doesn't mean not at all) in industry.
It is globally assumed that going for a PhD normally means the person belongs to "academia" vs "industry" unless specified otherwise.
Having said that, there is a good number of people working in MS / Google and a list of other labs. But i don't think that changes the primary concept.
Moreover, it is probably easy to switch to industry compared with switching to academics.
It is easy for a PhD. to get into industry where they are looking for researchers. But try getting into faculty at a good university with a BS in computer science and 15 years of industry experience. At best you might be accepted as a lecturer somehow. But that will be the end of it.
Academia never accepts "open source projects" or "live software experience" in lieu of research publications.
I am from industry with merely a BS. Would love to be enlightened, if above is not the case.

AssalamOAlaiakaum, I agree with you that "No disrespect but i have seen that a very few PhDs end up successful in industry and mostly end up in teaching/research (which i dont like)."
Brother, correct me if I am wrong. I think, the primary aims of a PhD essentially include to produce: i) Engineers/scientists who prove to be successful in industry or ii) Researchers equipped with independent research capability Needless to comment on the desired qualities which our PhDs need to have, in order to fulfill these two goals for national interests.

Hi All, I had exactly same question in my mind when i was about to finish my undergrad. I did not want to waste so many years of my life earning a PhD and even then have no guarantee of earning VERY good money. On the flip side, getting industry experience and specially industry CERTIFICATIONS can boost your pay tremendously. No disrespect but i have seen that a very few PhDs end up successful in industry and mostly end up in teaching/research (which i dont like). I live in Canada and have worked at Cisco Systems and Alcatel-Lucent (which pay more than average market rate) and i have two CCIE (R&S, SP). I just want to clarify that making $15000 a month with a little experience is the biggest lie i have ever heard. -- Usman On Tue, Aug 21, 2012 at 11:14 AM, Murtaza Bilgrami <smurtaza81pk@yahoo.com> wrote: Hi, It all depends upon your future planning. Dear fellows,
Assalam o Alykum, First of all EID Mubarak to all of you.
I really need an advice regarding career planning. I completed my Undergraduate form Pakistan in Electrical engineering. After that I got an opportunity to work in an engineering degree awarding institute as a lecturer (instructor). I served there for 2 years then I got scholarship opportunity and perused my Master's degree in Electrical engineering from a very well renowned Korean university.
Now, currently I am working in medium-scale Korean company. But I want to pursue a PhD so that I can have a honorable job (top level positions) in a well renowned company/university and can earn more (in future). But I am confused to go for a PhD or wait and have an industrial experience in related field. I request to the senior members of this group to please advise and help me to plan a good career.
I know I may sound stupid by asking these kinds of questions, but, I really want to have different opinions. Best regards, AKBAR, MS (EE) South Korea.
