Human musculoskeletal system contains 206 bones and over 200 muscles. In addition the skeleton has over 750 joints and hence a very large number of degrees of freedom that must be controlled and managed to produce skilled voluntary movement. The central nervous system in the body is responsible for planning, organization, coordination, and regulation of postural and voluntary movement, a task that it persistently and gracefully executes. This workshop introduces motor control of posture and movement from neuroscientific and biomechanical perspectives and its applications in robotic surgery. In addition, principles of movement learning and skills acquisition will be discussed.

NUST-SEECS is holding Workshop on
Neuro-scientific Principles and Biomechanical Models in Posture and Movement Analysis
Speakers: Dr. Kamran Iqbal (University of Arkansas), Dr. Sohail Iqbal (NUST-SEECS)
Time: 7-8 September, 2011; 10 am-2pm,
Venue: SEECS Academic Block Class Romm-2, NUST-SEECS, H-12, Islamabad
Workshop Objectives
Workshop Contents:
Introduction to biomechanics and motor control Posture and Movement Postural reactions and stability Central nervous system Nerve cells and signaling Sensorimotor system organization Sensory receptors and functions Biological servomechanisms Modeling of muscle mechanics Modeling of sensory receptors Models of skeletal mechanics Applications to Surgical Robotics Models of CNS decision making function Neuro-musculo-skeletal control system System transfer function and stability Simulation of voluntary movement Principles of movement optimization Neuroscientific perspective on motor control Application areas.
