The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in
Trondheim, Norway, is offering up to 4 PhD positions as part of the
Microsoft-led centre on Information Access Disruptions (iAD).
Partially funded by the Research Council of Norway as a Centre for
Research-based Innovation (SFI), iAD is directed by Microsoft
Development Center Norway (MDCN) in collaboration with Accenture, and
leading universities: Cornell University, Dublin City University, BI
Norwegian School of Management, and the universities in Tromsø (UiT),
Trondheim (NTNU) and Oslo (UiO).

Information access technology has emerged as one of the most
innovative technology areas impacting a wide range of industries,
business models and even social patterns. As part of iAD, the
Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) wants to employ
up to 4 PhD students, and the research problems of the PhD positions
should be within these target areas:

1.Cloud as a platform for next generation information access

2.Content based multimedia retrieval (Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Magnus Lie
Hetland, mlh at idi.ntnu.no).

3.Temporal and spatial information retrieval (Supervisor: Kjetil
Nørvåg, noervaag at idi.ntnu.no).

Specific Conditions: The PhD fellowships are placed in Norwegian
salary code 1017, gross NOK 391.100 per year (equivalent to approx. EUR 51.000 and USD 65.000).

Living Costs in Norway: A rule of thumb is that one pays approx. 35%
tax on net income. Public health care system is free for all (due to
the tax level). Generally there is no need for private health care
insurances. Education on all levels is free for all. Housing normally
cost between NOK 5000 (for a simple one bed studio with kitchenette,
possibly shared bathroom) and NOK 10000 (for a 3-4 piece apartment
suitable for a small family) per month.

Interested candidates are encouraged to contact Professor Svein Erik
Bratsberg (email: sveinbra at idi.ntnu.no) for general questions
regarding the project or the supervisors listed above for more
specific questions about doing a PhD within the listed target areas.
