USEFP has recently announced the 2013-14 FLTA program. This is to inform you that the application submission deadline is Wednesday July 10, 2013.You are requested to circulate this information among your students, colleagues, friends and community, as well as, other potential candidates, and encourage them to compete for these grants.

The FLTA Program is a nine-month, U.S. Department of State funded, non-degree program that provides young teachers of English an opportunity to refine their teaching skills, increase their English language proficiency and extend their knowledge of the society and culture of the United States, while teaching their native language to U.S. students and strengthening foreign language instruction at U.S. colleges and universities. Fulbright FLTA participants also interact with their host communities in conversation groups, extracurricular activities, and community outreach projects. Fulbright FLTA participants must immediately return to their home countries upon completion of the program.

Cycle

  • Tentative Announcement: March/April
  • Duration: 9-10 months
  • Grantees start studies: Fall next year

Eligibility Criteria

  • Pakistani national with a valid Pakistani Passport.
  • Resident in Pakistan throughout the nomination and selection process.
  • Not less than 21 years old and not more than 29 years old at the time of application.
  • Fluent in English, minimum of 220(CBT) or 90(IBT) on TOEFL.
  • Minimum of 16 years of formal education.
  • Must be an English language teacher at college or university level OR have some training to become an English language teacher.
  • Prior teaching experience is preferred.

How to apply

All application materials (original and one copy), including references and TOEFL score, must be received by USEFP at P.O. Box 1128 Islamabad. Please note that you cannot send application through courier to a P.O. Box address. Applications will be uploaded on the website as soon as the program is announced.

FAQs

What is included in the FLTA program?

The grant funds tuition, airfare, textbooks, a living stipend, and health insurance.

If I am selected when will I begin the fellowship program in the U.S?

Fall.

I received the application form/printed out an application form from the website www.usefpakistan.org. Now what do I do?

Before beginning to fill out the application form, it is imperative that you read the application form carefully as well as the general information pages and instructions that accompany it. The general information pages give an overview of the program and application review process. The instructions provide specific information about completing certain points of the application. Be sure to fully complete the application form. If a section does not apply to you, please write "Not Applicable".

Can I submit the application online?

Yes, but we also request that you send a hard copy of the application along with the supporting documents so that we receive it at USEFP by the deadline.

Do I really have to take the TOEFL?

The TOEFL is a requirement for the fellowship program. Applications without a valid TOEFL score report attached will not be considered. Please take TOEFL before the deadline. If you have not received your scores by the deadline, please attach proof of registration showing that you have already taken the exam.

Do I need any particular score on my TOEFL to qualify?

The minimum requirement is 550 (paper based) or 80 (internet based).

How will I know that my application was received?

The USEFP office will notify you of the receipt of your application by email. This may take some time as there are many applications to process.

How does the selection process work?

Selection process has four stages:

  • Round 1: All applications will be screened by USEFP staff for completeness and minimum qualifications.
  • Round 2: Complete applications that meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated according to a set of established criteria and short listed.
  • Round 3: In-person interviews of short listed applications will take place in Islamabad between June – September .The interview panels are made up of both U.S. and Pakistani citizens.
  • Round 4: Final candidates and alternates will be selected in October. Applicants who have become finalists or alternates will be notified by phone. Those who do not get selected will be notified by mail.

Will I need to submit any additional documents if I become a finalist?

Yes, Finalist will be required to submit a medical history and examination form, scanned copy of valid passport and No objection certificate (NOC) from employer / government of Pakistan.

Can I defer my FLTA award to the following academic year?

No, generally you cannot defer. Exceptions are made on case-by-case basis where circumstances are genuinely difficult.

If I decline FLTA award, and reapply, will my application be given preference?

Although you are welcome to apply again, your application will not be given preferential treatment.

Can I take dependants?

No, dependants are not allowed on this program.
