[pakgrid] Computational Linguistics: Introductory Lecture & Short Courses at DHA Suffa University

 

A free introductory lecture about Computational Linguistics will be delivered by Dr. Tafseer Ahmed at DHA Suffa University, Karachi on Monday 10th June, 2013 at 2:30 PM. (It will be repeated on Saturday 15th June, 2013 at 10:00 AM.)


Students of Linguistics and Computer Science are invited to learn about the following.
How does computer process human languages?
How do we make formal models of human languages?
What is Statistical Natural Language Processing?
What are the status and future of NLP for Pakistani Languages?
Why Computational Linguistics is relevant to computer science as well as linguistics student?

The instructor, Dr. Tafseer Ahmed, received PhD degree from University of Konstanz, Germany. He worked on polysemy of spatial markers and non-spatial usages of spatial markers for 10 South Asian languages (including 6 Pakistani languages). In his Post-Doc research, he worked on computational grammar of Urdu using LFG framework. Earlier, he has worked on English to Urdu machine translation and text mining for Urdu.

The Centre of Continuing Education, DHA Suffa University, Karachi is organizing two short courses on Computational Linguistics from 24-June-2013 to 05-July-2013.

The short course of Natural Language Processing is for PhD, MS and BS-final year students of Computer Science.
