Subject: [visionlist] Job posting -- postdoctoral position in machine learning at Carnegie Mellon University

Starting date: September 2013

One postdoctoral position is available in the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh, USA)

Chronic neurodegenerative movement disorders like Parkinson's disease (PD) pose a serious threat to the elderly population. One of the contributors to these costs is the requirement for periodic assessment of the motor symptoms which is performed during clinic visits. There are several shortcomings of this process: 1) inconvenience of the patients and most importantly, 2) the subjectiveness of the motor symptom assessment tests. In this project, we propose to build a system consisting of a set of low-cost wearable accelerometers and Kinect camera to detect and quantitatively assess the severity of the motor symptoms during daily living environments.  This system will not only reduce the requirements for frequent clinic-visits but also allow the neurologists track patient's medication cycles, which could be very useful to administer more effective personalized care. Such a system also has the potential to alert the patients to seek hospital-care when the severity of the symptoms threatens their safety.

A strong background in machine learning and/or computer vision is required, in particular knowledge about  time-series analysis is desirable. This will be initially a one year position  with the possibility of an extension pending funding. The post-doc will also coordinate the work of several graduate students throughout the year. Applications should be sent by email (ftorre@cs.cmu.edu) and should include a CV, the expected date of availability, and the contact information for 3 references.
