Since we bought our Hughes system in 2005 we have been on IA8/G28. Initially the service was very good but over the years the download speed has become erratic and now, on the worst days (and there seem to be more of them all the time), the speed is comparable to dial-up. (I know that speeds depend on traffic, time of day, weather and such).

We live in central Alberta and winter in southern AZ so we need a satellite that works in both places.

The options for us are: AMC9, G17/G11, G3, G16/G4R, SM5, HZN1.

My question? Do we tough it out on G28 or will one or more of those satellites give us better service?

We are currently on the Skyway (250 MB) plan and would like to go to Skyway Plus (350 MB) but I hate the thought of spending more money for such poor service on our existing satellite.

Thanks,
Sally

P.S. Would a transponder change on G28 help? (We were initially set up on 1170 MHz ... I think we were on 1410 for awhile ... not sure what it is now.)

I have been on G16 for seven years. On occasion it has had its problems but
overall I am happy with it.

While there are also things on the user end that can affect speeds, things on the Hughes end are isolated to individual gateways - there are more than one gateway per transponder.

Typically you can't change transponders (even though Hughes may routinely change it as they kill or reduce the size of existing ones), so even though that would be one way to get a new gateway it is probably impossible.

Changing satellites is the traditonal way of getting a new gateway, but changing service plans will often do it as well.

SM8 (SM5 was replaced, just as G11 and G4R were in your list) would not work for Canada. HZN1 can be flaky at both ends. The others are probably OK.
