Research Assistant / Software Developer

Minimum Qualification Required: BSc or equivalent + 2 years experience in s/w development or communication technology research.

Major Duties:

The role will encompass a range of activities related to communication technology security research and software development in an exciting multi-disciplinary European research project in the area of data handling compliance. The successful applicant will be dynamic, capable of working on own initiative as well as in a team environment. The role will include travel to European destinations. The successful candidate will join a team of professional researchers working on a range of projects in IT security research. The team spans basic research through applied research to product commercialisation.

Required Skills: Java, XML, networking protocols and technologies. A good knowledge of security in communication technologies and/or data storage and access.

Preferred:

A proven track record in research.  UML modelling skills. A knowledge of rules-based systems.  Experience with agile development methodologies(e.g. SCRUM) an advantage. Knowledge of SQL and Java database development.

Software Developer

Minimum Qualification Required: BSc or equivalent + 2 years experience in s/w development or communication technology research.

Major Duties:

The role will involve typical s/w engineering activities such as system design, development, unit test case design, development and execution. The successful applicant must be a self-starter with enthusiasm and creativity to tackle novel problems and immediately contribute to the team.  They should also have good communication skills and work well within a team and with other stakeholders such as testers, researchers, etc.

The successful candidate will join a team of professional researchers working on a range of projects in Telecommunication and Energy research. The team spans basic research through applied research to product commercialisation.

The role may involve some travel.

Required Skills: Java, XML, networking protocols and technologies.

Preferred:

A proven track record in software development. A knowledge of network management tools and utilities. A knowledge of networking protocols such as SNMP. An understanding of Telecommunications Network principles such as routing, congestion and admission control. Experience with agile development methodologies. Knowledge of C and familiarity of LINUX kernel code development would be an advantage.
