Subject: [DistComp] Open Position PhD. in Energy-aware computing

=====
Subject: Energy Aware application monitoring

At IRIT-University of Toulouse (one of the largest computer science laboratory in France: more than 600 researchers), our group (7 permanent researchers, 1 PostDoc, 9 PhD) is currently working on Energy Efficiency for Large Scale Distributed Systems.
CoolEmAll project, funded by the European Commission under the STREP FP7 program aims at providing advanced planning and optimization tools for modular data center environments. Such a tool cannot succeed without obtaining information from an adapted monitoring infrastructure.

To succeed this infrastructure has to take into account energy consumed by each computer. The goal of this PhD is to use this constraint as a benefit to provide added value to the system and to help take decision that will reduce energy consumption. This information about energy consumption is necessary to evaluate the behavior of the system.

By categorizing patterns of energy consumption of application, this work will use energy captors to create high level information on the type and behavior of running application, without the help of the programmer of this application.

This characterization will also be the base of benchmarks that will help evaluating the performance of modular data centers. An open question is still how to compare two data centers, and how efficient is a particular data center. Current metrics are not adapted to answer those questions and this PhD will create and evaluate new ones.

The PhD. will have two aspects: theoretical foundations and practical implementations.
* Design and implementation of an application characterization monitor
* Design and evaluation of a metric enabling to compare data centers
* Characterization of workload and energy consumption of typical applications
* Mathematical model of application energy consumption depending on workload and heat dispersion
* Design and implementation of benchmarks that mimic these workloads

Requirements:
-  A Master in Computer Science
-  Experience in at least one of the following: Distributed systems, Mathematical model, Performance evaluation
