I am Technologist trained in the West. I have no degree in marketing/business plan/business modeling etc. But to move up the corporate ladder in West I have been transformed to think "ROI" Return on Investment. In fact all the contracts that I captured in Advanced Technology Development I approached as a businessman first and this is what is required of Senior Technologist in the West.
You can have brilliant idea and a product but if you don't know who is going to buy and what is the cost and return over the product life-cycle even you in all due fairness won't invest in your own idea.
What I am surprised to see in Pakistan is that business angle is left to doldrums. You can have millions of theoreticians/experimentalists/engineers but without a sound business plan/marketing plan you will continue to see what is going on today until we realize.
And despite all the failures people keep hitting the same brickwall......go figure.

Back in Nov 2006, at a conference organized by PASHA in Lahore, Bro Hasan Rizvi, from 5RiversTechnologies, demonstrated their tablet, (at that time we used to call it Palmtop) which they then aimed for $70 or less, and they wrote its OS named Alif, and they provided support to develop Urdu applications as well. Later, they contacted different universities, including LUMS and FAST Lahore convincing students to write different applications for their OS and provided kits and necessary HW as well.
Some how this wonderful and practical idea did not get through.
This was envisioned by Mr Ameer (pl correct me if I am wrong) who was co-founder of FiveRiversTechnologies and was US-based.
So, there is no dearth of ideas, visions and even successful prototypes, but why things don't take off?
We need more PakGrid(s) where ideas could be shared and more volunteers to support them.

Such projects can be undertaken easily in Pakistan, given the chip design expertise available locally. When I conducted FPGA design workshop in Rawalpindi several years ago, I found some people very well grounded in chip design.
