Hello All

For many weeks I've been experiencing extremely slow and often erratic service on G28/I-A8. I was wondering is anyone else on this satellite is having the same trouble? (This problem seems to rear its ugly little head 2 or 3 times a year. But this blip has lasted far too long.)

The plan I'm on "suggests" up/down speeds of 128 kbps/1Mbps. I know this is the ideal and seldom occurs in real life. However, If I could get even half of that I'd be happy. All too often the speeds are approaching dial-up.

I have a little program that gives me up and down speeds in "real" time ... don't know whether it's accurate. But all too often lately, 0/0 is popping up, or 20/20 ... meanwhile I'm not getting any traffic either way. My download speeds spend more time in the bytes-per-second than kilobytes. <sigh>

I thought before about moving to a different satellite. We live in Alberta (Western Canada) and take our system down south to NV, AZ etc each winter. Any recommendations for a different satellite (that would serve us in both areas) would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Sally

Hi Sally
I am no expert in this but I do know that twice a year the sun affects sat
communication. Spring and Fall... I have had the same problem with my TV
the last few days on 99W
Seann in Sask..

Hi Sean

Another Canuck :-)

Thanks for the reminder. I know some years back I had a bit of a problem around that time. My troubles seem to come and go (mostly come and don't go recently!).

Are you a snow birds as well?

I will add to the dilemma. I have been on 89W for some time with rarely
a problem. Lately (several months now) I have pages that will not
load. The reception is very slow. Emails are not bad, though. I have
in the last year replaced my modem and controller. My transmitter arm
was replaced a year ago. My router tests fine. I have had my computers
professionally scanned for Malware, Viruses, etc. Some fpound, but not
much of any significance. I sometimes allow others to use my connection
(it is secured), but they have the same problems I have. My VAR says
they have submitted my SAN to Hughes and that Hughes detects NO problems.

This is terribly frustrating. I was also thinking of switching
satellites, but I am not sure that is the answer.

I sympathize, Teddy. I work on a Mac and use Mac Mail (had to give up my favourite Eudora as Mac no longer supports Rosetta on which it is based). If I check for mail and the up/down speeds are 0/0, Mail hangs up my entire computer. Force Quit for just Mail won't work ... I must do a Force Quit for the entire system ... not a good thing to be doing.

Perhaps we'll hear from some users on other satellites who are having better luck!

I sure wish I knew what the REAL cause was!
