The Microsoft Jim Gray Systems Lab (GSL) in Madison, Wisconsin has several open
positions. Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in computer science and must have
demonstrated an ability to conduct original, systems-focused research in the
database field with publications in the proceedings of one or more of the major
database conferences (SIGMOD, VLDB, ICDE, CIDR, and EDBT).
The Gray System Lab was opened in September 2008 and is located on the edge of
the UW-Madison campus. In addition to the full time staff, the lab also houses eight
UW graduate students who are supported by a grant from Microsoft to UW-
Madison, giving the lab more of an academic feeling than one typically finds in
industry. In its short three and half year existence, this unique collaboration has
resulted in over a dozen publications in premier database conferences and
workshops (including some with a best paper award), and provides an effective way
for GSL employees to lead and collaborate on new, cutting-edge research. Since the
GSL is organizationally part of the Microsoft SQL Server Division, staff members
have a unique opportunity for their research to have an immediate impact on the
SQL Server and SQL Azure products.
We currently have several on-going projects in the areas of parallel database
systems, advanced storage technologies such as flash and PCM, main-memory
database systems, energy-aware database systems, and the design and
implementation of database systems for multicore processors. Many of these
projects involve a mix of full-time Microsoft employees (in Madison, Redmond, and
L.A.), students, and faculty.
If your passion is designing and building database systems that push the state of the
art, and you enjoy working on challenging research problems, please apply by
sending a copy of your resume to Lynn McManus at lynnmc@microsoft.com
with a cc to Melody Bakken at melodyb@microsoft.com.
If you have questions about the positions or the lab please send mail to
dewitt@microsoft.com. Questions can also be directed to Jeff Naughton
(naughton@cs.wisc.edu) or Jignesh Patel (jignesh@cs.wisc.edu).
