[pakgrid] PostDoctoral fellow in Computer Science with specialization in Database Technology

Uppsala University hereby declares the following position to be open
for application:

PostDoctoral fellow in Computer Science with specialization in
Database Technology

at the Department of Information Technology, in the research group
Uppsala DataBase Laboratory working on methods and tools for scalable
management, processing, and presentation of distributed massive data
streams.

Work description: The research group UDBL
http://www.it.uu.se/research/group/udbl/ is conducting several
research projects aimed at managing, searching, and analyzing very
large data volumes. The central research area is development of
systems and methods for scalable management, search, and analyzes of
data produced in very high rates. There is a lot of interest in this
kind of research from advanced manufacturing industry, which is in
transition from selling hardware to selling services. To enable
preventive maintenance of equipment-in-use, there is need for on-line
analyzes of data produced by the equipment. In collaboration with
leading Swedish industries, UDBL participate in several EU nationally
funded financed research projects. Similar requirement arise from
analyzing high volume data streams produced by scientific equipment,
where UDBL is part of the Swedish strategic research programme eSSENCE
for development of infrastructures for managing scientific data. Such
processing also needs development and management of constantly
changing meta-data describing properties of the data streams being
analyzed. A third issue is how to present the results from queries and
analyzes of high volume streaming data to end users in a scalable way.

We are looking for a PostDoctoral fellow within the area of scalable
and distributed management, search, analyzes, and presentation of high
volume data streams. The position included 20% teaching on
undergraduate and graduate level.

Employment period: The employment period is for two years from the
hiring date.

Qualifications: To qualify for the position the applicant must have a
PhD degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or
equivalent. Priority is given to applicants who have completed their
PhD within 3 years of making this application; not counting parental
or sick leave periods.

Criteria for ranking: When ranking the qualified applicants special
emphasis will be given on knowledge of modern database systems
research. In filling this position, the university aims to recruit the
person who, in the combined evaluation of competence, skills and
documented qualification, is judged most suitable to independently
carry out and develop the work-in-hand and to contribute to a positive
development of the department. The applicant must have good skills in
both spoken and written English.

How to apply: Applications should include a description of research
interests and past experience, a CV, copies of exams, degrees and
grades, a copy of Ph.D. thesis (or a draft thereof), relevant
publications, and other relevant documents. Candidates are encouraged
to provide letter(s) of recommendation and contact information to
reference persons, and further to indicate their preferred research
project(s) or research direction(s), as well as earliest feasible
starting date of employment. The application should include name,
address, and phone number.

Uppsala University is striving to achieve a more even gender
balance. The majority of the employees in this category are men so
women are especially invited to apply for this position.

Some information about health- and childcare in Sweden: As an employee
in Sweden you are entitled by law to at least five weeks of paid
holiday per year. Healthcare is free after a small fee in connection
with the first visit to a doctor. The parental benefits in Sweden are
among the best in the world, e.g., you can take 13 months of parental
leave and extend the length of your postdoc correspondingly. Childcare
is of high quality and very affordable.
