FYI.....
a very useful workshop @SEECS, NUST, H/12, Islamabad

Assalam_O_Alikum,

here is a brief introduction of LaTeX.

LaTeX is a document markup language and a documentation preparation system for TeX typesetting program. LaTeX  is most widely used by mathematicians, scientists, engineers, philosophers, Lawyers.  Linguist, economists, researchers and other scholars in academia. As a primary or intermediate format, LaTeX is used because of high quality of typesetting achievable by TeX. The typesetting system offers programmable desktop publishing features and extensive facilities for automating most aspects of typesetting and desktop publishing, including numbering and cross-referencing, tables and figures, page layout and bibliographies. It is intended to provide the high level language that accesses the power of TeX. LaTeX essentially comprises a collection of TeX macros and a program to process LaTeX documents. Because the TeX formatting commands are very low-level, it is usually much simpler for end-users to use LaTeX. It converts source text, combined with the markup, into a high quality document. For the purpose of analogy, web pages work in a similar way: the HTML is used to describe the document, but it is browser that presents it in its full glory - with different colours, fonts, sizes, etc. The input for LaTeX is a plain ASCII text file. You can create it with any text editor. It contains the text of the document, as well as the commands that tell LaTeX how to typeset the text.
The contents that are going to be covered in this workshop would be:
  • Introduction to LaTeX
  • Installation on Different OS
  • Why LaTeX is Preferred on MS-Word
  •  Basic Commands of LaTeX
  •  Tables and Figures
  •  Mathematical Equations, Algorithms and Theorems
  •  Labels and Cross-references
  •  Bibliography Management
