Subject: Rare and informative cell mining in very large blood samples.

LIRMM and INRIA are seeking candidates for a Postdoctoral Fellowship position to work on a new research project, called VIPP, on extracting useful knowledge in large volumes of cells from blood samples. The project involves the flow cytometer of the LCCRH lab, which is the first flow-cytometring and sorting device in Europe.

Currently, many teams are developing robust methods to identify cells characteristics of diseases such as HIV, acute and chronic vascular diseases, breast, colon or prostate cancers and generally to help medical diagnosis. This is a challenging issue since these cells only appear very few and their characteristics are very difficult to identify. For example, depending of the pathology, only 1-100 cells per milliliter of blood can express different markers representing a pathology (among hundreds of millions). Four main labs are involved in the project: The LIRMM lab on computer science, INRIA, the I3M lab working on statistics and the LCCRH lab on medical aspects.

The University of Montpellier 2, will be making a one year appointment for an energetic capable and responsible Post Doctoral Fellow, to work with us on the challenging problem of extracting rare cells as well as potential useful correlations between cells.

The ideal candidate:
- has recently completed a Ph.D. in computer science in the areas of data mining, statistics or related fields,
- has demonstrated the ability to conduct both fundamental and applied work in these areas,
- is proficient in English,
- has good skills in Java and/or C++.

Location: LIRMM, Montpellier (south of France, on the mediterranean sea).
Net salary: 2200 Euros / month.

Interested candidates are requested to send an application by e-mail to Dr. Florent Masseglia (Florent.Masseglia@inria.fr) and Prof. Pascal Poncelet (Pascal.Poncelet@lirmm.fr) with the subject field: 'VIPP Post Doctoral Position'.
