Is there a process which I can use that will allow me to check the condition of the modem when I get it? I assume there must be some communication between the satellite and modem that would provide an indications that communications has been establish. Can anyone provide there expertize in this area?

Put the latest config file into the modem, then pick anything from the dropdown boxes during the registration process.

Yes. I would select 117W/1070/V/H/30 as this transponder is also in the
setup routine. As long as you are not in the NW or the N. most US Western
States it will work everywhere else.
