Tri-Pod System new to me.

I have been reading this site for quite a while now. In 1 to 1.5 years will be full-timing. Susan and I have determine that Hughes will be primary system with a data card as a backup.

I recently picked up a complete Dusty-foot setup. The modem is a DW7000, understand I will need to get a H7000S and not a 9000 to complete the system.
I have been playing around getting it setup so at least the receiver is working. My mayor plan is to redo all cables and connectors first. Then locate a modem on Ebay (using care). Is there a process which I can use that will allow me to check the condition of the modem when I get it? I assume there must be some communication between the satellite and modem that would provide an indications that communications has been establish. Can anyone provide there expertize in this area?
Thank you for your help

Don't want to discourage you but you may find the air card your best choice, and not the Hughes service. I use both, and travel extensively, however there are few places in my travels where the air card (I use a Sprint MiFi) doesn't work, and it only takes a minute to get on-line. Tripod setup and aiming takes lots longer, and when you ar in inclement weather or the trees, or the dark, you may not want to even try aiming that dish.

I do a complete setup and registration. The modem needs to converse with the
Hughes server and goes through a handshake. If you get that far with good
lights and SS it's a good indication the modem is working. You should be
able to get an HN7000S for less than $50.

I think whether the air card works more than not depends on individual
travel preferences. Many folks like to stay in more out of the way places,
where cell service is either slow or non-existent. Others travel almost
exclusively within cell tower range.

Another factor is whether being offline a few days here or there is
acceptable. For many, it is, but for others it is not!

With that said, let me also mention StarBand, as an alternative to
HughesNet.

Joe and I prefer StarBand because tech support is in the US, you get can
your installer certifiction for no charge (online, open book test), and a
complete refurbished system is only $100 plus shipping. New is $200 plus
shipping.

And, you will be able to use all of the other accessories (except an OPI)
that you got with the Dustyfoot system.

Take care,

Barb

Wow, this was fast in getting responses.

As for the question Hughes Vs Air Card. Barb is correct, we stay in places where their is no signal up 3 weeks. The only way is for us to drive Min 15miles to get a signal. And that may not be on our carrier.

So primary is Hughes.

Stan mention that to verify the modem do a complete setup and registration. That seems to tell me: first get a modem, next establish an account with Hughes then go thru setup and registration.
yes / no?

And finally Barb, you mention Starband. I will check into this system.
Thanks to everyone

Incidentally, with HughesNet, you also need to contact HughesNet customer
service and make sure a) there are no outstanding charges against the modem
and b) it is no longer "locked".

HughesNet locks the modem for anywhere from 45 to 75 days, depending on the
day the service is cancelled and the monthly billing date.

The modem cannot be recommissioned until it is both unlocked and any
outstanding charges have been paid.

Take care,

Barb
