Since you refuse to post model numbers of the modem or OPI we can only assume that you don't have anything worth buying. The fiberglass dish is the only item which has any value since it cannot be deformed, they are available on ebay at about $25.

Jim... clarity on the modem number is needed if you want to sell it. The
reason is if it is a DW7000 it is difficult to impossible use it. Those
modems are blocked from Hughes. They are considered junk.

BUT, if it is an HN7000 then it can be used. In fact the HN7000 is the only
one that can be used in an RV mobile environment.

The HN7000 comes and goes on E-bay for $25+.

Yep... I would say so...

The dish may have value...

Craig's list has been a good place for me to buy a dish.

I need a little info and thought I'd check here first. I have the
HN7000S system and 3 dishes. Two have the oval window with a narrow
transmitter on the arm, the 3rd is the rectangular window and wide
transmitter. Does anyone know of a place that could check/repair the
stuff on the arms? I suspect the LNB is bad on a couple of them (one of
each), but wouldn't mind having it all checked out. I hope I could find
a place online, but figured there was no sense reinventing the wheel if
someone knew offhand.

Thanks,
Duane

Duane.. IMHO the best way to check them out is to set them
up yourself assuming of course you know how to do that. You
don't have to have an active account I believe. You can tuner in
receive. On most any bird then check the cross pol and proceed
up to registration if you want. When you get all the lights you should
be good to go without actually connecting to the internet.

Do that on all three dishes.

Bradner's DSat tool makes this all quite easy except actually
moving the dish to peak the signal.

If you found a buddy in the neighborhood that uses Hughes he
might be able to help you.

If something doesn't work make sure you try different power
supply... I had one go bad once which took a while to find.

Thanks for the suggestions, Skip. I left out a few details in the original post. I should know better, being a retired maintenance man. More info is always better.

My system shut down a while back. I swapped in one of the entire arms and still got no connectivity. I then tried the one that's on there now. A little tweaking the position and it's been working fine since. I guess I could swap out individual pieces and verify which ones are good/bad, but that will need to wait for nicer weather. I'd still like to find a place that could repair them.

I haven't opened up an LNB yet, but I doubt there's much in there. Probably a few parts that may have critical heat or frequency ratings. The transmitter shouldn't be too complicated either. I've worked in electronics for over 45 years, but haven't had much to do with the high frequency stuff since my USAF radar days.

I'm on my third power supply since 2003, so I now know to check that, under load, first. Don's tools are definitely in my arsenal.

I dud into this years back when I got into Hughes for RVing. I asked a lot
about how these systems worked and could not get what seemed like a valid
answer. It seem unreasonable to me the transceiver simply pushed through the
coax in some manner to the mode. My RF MW awareness from the telecom
background knew this could not be accurate without using wave guide.

The big DUH happened and I found tutorials on Hughes... someplace.

What's in the arm are more than HF. They operate on the satellite side on
the MW bands around 10 GHZ +/-. The transceiver functions as a down
converter frequency band converter. The coax side down to the 2 GHz +/-
band to so coax cable can handle the frequency with less loss and roll off.

I took my old Raven head apart once and there isn't much to it. I functions
like a funnel to an extent and has small wave guide tuned to the sat
frequency that connects to the actual electronics unit on the arm that
converts. Its pretty rock solid IMHO. Used dishes are so inexpensive it
makes no sense to me to try changing them out. They don't go bad very often
based on posts on the forum. Most techs would not be trained enough or have
equipment to repair one... just get another one if swapping points to it
being bad.

Of course this all my opinion.

Duane,

Typically, you swap a part out, not fix it. We've been doing satellite since
2002 and that has always been the approach.

If you ever come to Tucson, we have lots of used HughesNet equipment:
dishes, radios, modems, and arms.

Take care,

Barb

Thanks, Barb and Skip. I guess I have nothing to lose by opening them up to see if I can repair them once I determine the culprit. Seems like there should be someone, someplace that could/would do a refurb at a flat rate like is done for other electronic modules. Might be an interesting hobby for my retirement years. Unless the replacement parts are just too cheap.
