Hi everyone - i just joined the group and came across this thread. We just bought a travel trailer and plan being mostly in Wyoming (Yellowstone) area for 1 or 2 months this summer. We need internet connectivity all the time for work (my husband needs it for making trades, I need it for accessing email for work) - we don't need video streaming/gaming/youtube type of stuff.

Of course we would like to keep costs reasonable (who wouldn't!) - we can do some stuff ourselves (e.g. point the satellite in the right direction).

Seems like there are a number of options - appreciate any advice on where to start.

Annette

Hi! If you're looking for tripod Internet, please check out our web site and
contact me if you have questions - I'd start in the Satellite Systems menu:

Annette, this is exactly how my wife and I used our Hughes portable set up
for the last seven years. We activate ours for about three months during the
summer then put it in suspension. In round numbers the active monthly costs
have varied since early on from about $60/month to last year when it was
$90/month. In simple terms this allowed us to use 425 mbs/24 hour period
which has sufficed for us. If large downloads were needed we scheduled it
from between 1 AM to 6 AM EST. In the last couple years I could only suspend
for six months at a time. If a longer suspension time was needed I had to
activate it for a month then suspend it again. There as $50 charge for each
suspension.

During this time we have been assigned to the D16 satellite and it has
served us well. I have two HN7000s modems and an extra power supply. I use a
low tripod with the .78 Directway fiberglass antenna. It takes about 15 to
30 minutes to set up. I insert a wireless router on the connection and use
Bradners DSAT tool and HNFap alert to set up and monitor usage. I bought my
antenna and modems on E-Bay and Craig's list. I have about 300' of cable and
I have only used 100'.

Early on set up was a real bear as I self trained. I probably made every
mistake one could make most of which was driven by impatience. The last few
years it has setup has been no problem.

Thanks to all who have responded. We have tried the 89 west and 99 west SATS, no luck. I have tried many of the ideas. But, still not working. We are planning on heading to AZ in the Casa Grande area this weekend. Depending on weather conditions. If anyone happens to be along or in the I-10 area from Galveston, TX to AZ that might have the knowledge to repair the problem I would appreciate any help offered. I will be rechecking all connections again this week.  RTC suggested a bad board in the MotoSat system. Source for parts?? which board? Location. Maybe just reseating or cleaning the contacts??

Thanks,
Von

Most of the answers aren't noticing that it probably isn't a modem problem - "My system could not find my sat, 89w locked on once for a second or so" implies an automatic dish with the problem being failure to find the satellite. The modem can be a factor in that, but in most cases a dish should find the satellite without needing the modem.

Von, we need more information.

What controller? D2, D3, D4, J1?

Unless it is a D2, how long since you uploaded a satellite table (I built a new Hughes one last week that is on DSU)?

If it is a D3, that controller cannot find 89H anymore, so only 89V will work in generic mode. The only time 89H should be used is when the modem is commissioned to a transponder on 89H. That means fully commissioned, not just trying to get there to do a registration.

The easiest satellite for my new table to find in generic mode is 91V, if you are looking for a satellite to run registration on.

If it is not a D2, what is the signal trigger setting?

Do,
Thanks so much for your help. I will try to respond to your questions tonight. Need to get to an appointment soon.

I have a D3 as far as I know.

I don't know that I would have worded it the way Gary did, but basically this is the case:

Nothing about the past service history matters in solving this problem.

Every detail about exactly what you are trying to do now (what controller; what satellite, polarity, frequency and symbol rate are set in that controller, along with the trigger setting) DO matter a lot.

When i deploy my moto sat, I am getting a message 18 then after a time a message 13 on the receiver side. i get a good signal. for awhile i was having to raise and lower the unit a couple of times to get online, then it would get online. also it has be getting online for a short period of time then back to three lites and message 13....

I have a D2 controller, and am HN7000S Modem....

I think it might be the receiver but i dont how to test for this...

Thanks for any input in advance.
