Signal problems - moisture in the system? by "Robert Handren" rthandren

Been mainly a lurker here for 10 or so years starting out
with a D1 positioner and dual Direcway Modems. Currently I am using a D3 with a
DW 7000 modem (not a 7000S).
I bought this particular system as a nearly new but Motosat factory
refurbished unit about a year and a half ago. It worked fine when parked
about 5 months later.  I bought it from a reliable dealer I have used for a long time so I am sure that description is accurate. When I restarted using the system this month it worked
fine, the positioner found the correct 89W bird quickly and the modem showed a
system light after minimal hassling around and rebooting. However, after a
couple of days it started acting up. The symptoms are I can only get a signal quality
of 45-49 on average but the signal will be consistent and actually fairly usable for
hours at a time. But after some hours of operation it then randomly starts dropping signal quality to a value of
exactly 30 which lasts for a second or two, then jumps back up to the 45-59. Each time the signal quality drops the timing
is lost and the modem must reconnect. The "system" light goes out, the transceiver
does an exchange of signals and the system comes back on until the quality
drops to 30 again. The drop is always to 30 exactly. The max quality is always 45-49.
One comment was made about there possibly being moisture in one or more of the
wave guide components.  These symptoms
have been the same a multiple locations in FL, the Carolinas and VA and are the
same with a cloudless sky or cloudy.
I cannot afford to throw a lot of money at this system and
need to make the decision whether to seek repair or switch to paying more money
for less service from cellular. Any suggestions appreciated.

Have you tried peaking up the signal manually? I've always done that, because it is rare that I can't improve things.

A lot of transponders have minimum signals down in the 40s. What that means, for example, is that if the minimum is 43 and you are getting 42-48, when it drops below 43 it goes away completely (and 30 is what it would drop to).

There are manual controls in the web interface, but generally my DSAdmin tool is easier to use. Move 1/2 degree increments in azimuth and elevation.

Hi, also don't be afraid to adjust the skew of the dish from the default. I've seen that help when my signal wouldn't let me get online.
