Dear All:
PIF's launch initiative - 'The National Innovation Grand Challenge' (NIGC) - is an 'Open Innovation' Competition designed to engage and empower Pakistani youth - students, entrepreneurs, professionals, and citizen innovators - in helping solve Pakistan's Development Problems and Competitiveness Challenges. Prizes are sponsored by some of the leading corporate and non-profit partners with strategic long-term interests in prize areas.
Patterned after the famous X-Prize and Grand Challenges in Global Health, the NIGC is a 15-month long process (starting July 2013) entailing design, prototype, and demonstration phases that will help train and mentor innovation teams to think out of the box and compete to solve a pre-specified problem (see promo video below):

The NIGC will engage upto 150 teams competing for 4-6 'Prizes' sponsored by a corporate entity or a non-profit with some strategic interest in the area to solve a pre-defined well-specified problem. The participating teams shall be provided training, mentoring, networking, and even seed capital through the course of the 15-month long process.
I would like to write to you to introduce Pakistan Innovation Foundation - a private-sector driven non-profit platform - created to promote innovation within private sector and a broader society in Pakistan.
PIF seeks to do so by creating and executing a core programme agenda focussed on awareness building, rewarding and recognising innovation, and research and advocacy. In doing so, PIF seeks to fundamentally alter the incentives structure and help create an eco-system to support innovation within the society.
Pakistan - world's sixth largest country of a country of 185 million people - is suffering through a series of development challenges in food, energy, water, healthcare, education, and employment that threaten the very fabric of the society and pose a series sustainabilty challenge at multiple levels. In 25 years time, Pakistan's population would touch 300 million causing stresses on the life-support-system that will be unheard-off.
We strongly believe that the only way to address the current challenges is through innovation. Yet, the country suffers through disability of state institutions due to a total lack of governance. This is where an organised private sector can have a transformative effect. PIF seeks to jumpstart innovation by organising private sector to innovate.
