I stopped by there Thursday afternoon. I spoke to Bryan Young,
president. He seems to be a straight shooting, down home type of guy.
They're not set up to sell mobile RV systems, just service. He does have
3 MotoSAT systems sitting in the shop that he would like to sell (he
didn't mentioned which model controller and I forgot to ask) and I
believe they're unused, though not brand new. Hughes asked them to take
over after the screw-ups by MotoSAT. RTC sells higher priced systems,
mainly for mobile businesses like oil rigs, and does business all over
the world. Their current base system is about $17k. They even have one
system that gets 5MB down and 2MB up!
They've had many irate people call because the information they got from
MotoSAT was incomplete and/or obsolete. They've attempted to contact
everyone, but were unable to do so for those accounts that had bad phone
numbers, mailing addresses, and email addresses. Their only choice at
that time as to turn the system off. When the owners called in and the
situation was explained, most folks were civilized and they got things
straightened out.
RTC is happy to activate systems for RV folks and they'll try to help
with problems although income from these systems is minimal. I got the
impression that the easy going folks would get the most cooperation. He
said they can even activate a locked modem with a little effort,
provided the system is set up properly and otherwise works. They've
even had a few folks send the modem to them to be commissioned and sent
back.
They will furnish tokens during normal business hours. They pay exactly
what they charge for them.
Bryan asked that anyone that sells mobile RV systems get in touch with
them. They'd be glad to refer callers for sales. He mentioned that
there are about 600 MotoSAT systems still in service, but was unsure how
many tripods there may be.
We got off on a tangent about Satmex8 and he said the footprint will be
a bit different than Satmex5.
Bryan said to call the main number, (903)986-2663, if you need help and
they'll forward it to the person most likely to be able to assist. It's
a small shop, so they may need to call you back. You can write directly
to him at byoung @ rtc-vsat.com if you'd like to discuss any details.
I'm sure we covered a few other things that I've forgotten to include,
but this is the initial summary. If I think of anything important, I'll
follow up.
