Re: [pakgrid] Career Advice - help please

Added to that, comparing 15k USD per month in US (without mentioning state since cost of living varies greatly) with 2k USD in pak is unrealistic.

What is the amount of tax you pay living in US? In some cases it is around 30% or so. Certainly not as much in Pakistan.

Quality of life is certainly better in US. But there is a long list of factors to compare before one starts comparing two different locations and compensations outright.

A funny correlation but i remember when we used to be kids, and had an uneducated relative who some how slipped to some foreign country and managed to earn some money over there. Usually their families would brag about their incomes directly translated into local currencies. "Saada munda 4-5 lakh rupaye kama lenda ay. Te chitta anparh ay - Ki faida towadi daktare di taleem da"

We grew up to compare both these incomes objectively, even when strictly comparing the financials only. I hope it doesn't start all over again.

My two cents.

There is a difference between little experience and average experience. Also some consultants make very good money as well.Anyways, Long story short there are so many options rather than sticking to $2000 per month in Pakistan and lot of frustration with a Phd degree.

Hi All,

I had exactly same question in my mind when i was about to finish my undergrad. I did not want to waste so many years of my life earning a PhD and even then have no guarantee of earning VERY good money. On the flip side, getting industry experience and specially industry CERTIFICATIONS can boost your pay tremendously. No disrespect but i have seen that a very few PhDs end up successful in industry and mostly end up in teaching/research (which i dont like).

I live in Canada and have worked at Cisco Systems and Alcatel-Lucent (which pay more than average market rate) and i have two CCIE (R&S, SP). I just want to clarify that making $15000 a month with a little experience is the biggest lie i have ever heard.

Hi,

It all depends upon your future planning. You are already overseas and if you return to Pakistan even with your honorable job (top level positions) in a well renowned company/university in Pakistan will pay you $2000 per month salary (including all the perks driver and car etc.).You need to complete some management degrees if you want to join reputed company in Pakistan.Pakistan have its own problems like high inflation and Pak Rs exchange rate daily sliding downwards.

If you stay overseas then in western countries (with just average experience) you can earn upto $15000 per month.

Try to get job in KSA (Saudia), UAE, UK,Canada,USA or Australia then you will be lot better off and financially secure.UK,Australia and Canada gives free education upto Phd for their citizens and their children with free lifetime medical facilities. No University or job in comapny in the world can give free lifetime medical facilities which UK,Canada and Australia give to their citizens.

 Thanks,
Murtaza

Dear fellows,

Assalam o Alykum, First of all EID Mubarak to all of you.

I really need an advice regarding career planning. I completed my Undergraduate form Pakistan in Electrical engineering. After that I got an opportunity to work in an engineering degree awarding institute as a lecturer (instructor). I served there for 2 years then I got scholarship opportunity and perused my Master's degree in Electrical engineering from a very well renowned Korean university.

Now, currently I am working in medium-scale Korean company. But I want to pursue a PhD so that I can have a honorable job (top level positions) in a well renowned company/university and can earn more (in future).
But I am confused to go for a PhD or wait and have an industrial experience in related field. I request to the senior members of this group to please advise and help me to plan a good career.

I know I may sound stupid by asking these kinds of questions, but, I really want to have different opinions.

Best regards,
AKBAR, MS (EE)
South Korea.
