I would further like to share my experience with regards to the Gulf dream. I have been working here for some years now and I feel that things are changing.

1. All the Gulf countries have a huge focus on localization. This would mean that they are forcing private companies to hire and train locals. The localization has been talked about in Gulf for a lot of years but now it is really being enforced. Banking and ITC are two sectors where the government has put a lot of focus on localization. This would mean that the expatriate population is going to be fighting for a smaller share of the senior positions only.

2. Due to the current (which may go on for a long time) economic climate, there is a large influx of Europeans and Americans that is exploring Gulf job market. Initially, Gulf was preferred by South Asian and Middle Eastern countries but now I see a very high influx of Western countries as well. This has put strain on the job market. One may be able to find a job, but it is getting pretty tough to climb up the corporate ladder as before.

3. The reputation of Pakistanis has been tarnished very badly in the last decade or so. We may blame the American, the Talibans or our politicians, but the fact of the matter is that Pakistanis are no more the preferred nationality for employment as before.

So, in case you are thinking about coming to Gulf. I would strongly advise you to weigh your options and see your long term goals before committing to anything.

Hi All,

I had exactly same question in my mind when i was about to finish my undergrad. I did not want to waste so many years of my life earning a PhD and even then have no guarantee of earning VERY good money.. On the flip side, getting industry experience and specially industry CERTIFICATIONS can boost your pay tremendously. No disrespect but i have seen that a very few PhDs end up successful in industry and mostly end up in teaching/research (which i dont like).

I live in Canada and have worked at Cisco Systems and Alcatel-Lucent (which pay more than average market rate) and i have two CCIE (R&S, SP). I just want to clarify that making $15000 a month with a little experience is the biggest lie i have ever heard.

Try to get job in KSA (Saudia), UAE, UK,Canada,USA or Australia then you will be lot better off and financially secure.UK,Australia and Canada gives free education upto Phd for their citizens and their children with free lifetime medical facilities.No University or job in comapny in the world can give free lifetime medical facilities which UK,Canada and Australia give to their citizens.

I really need an advice regarding career planning.. I completed my Undergraduate form Pakistan in Electrical engineering. After that I got an opportunity to work in an engineering degree awarding institute as a lecturer (instructor). I served there for 2 years then I got scholarship opportunity and perused my Master's degree in Electrical engineering from a very well renowned Korean university.

Now, currently I am working in medium-scale Korean company. But I want to pursue a PhD so that I can have a honorable job (top level positions) in a well renowned company/university and can earn more (in future).

But I am confused to go for a PhD or wait and have an industrial experience in related field. I request to the senior members of this group to please advise and help me to plan a good career.

I know I may sound stupid by asking these kinds of questions, but, I really want to have different opinions.
