Dear Friends -

Our paper on speech-based services for low-literacy users (joint work with CMU) that was accepted at ACM CHI 2013, has been selected for the Best Paper Award!

ACM CHI 2013 is the top venue of publication for research in human-computer interaction. Our paper is the first to be accepted from Pakistan -- and ranked the best paper from nearly 2,000 submissions this year.

This paper reports on our system called Polly, which we launched on May 9, 2012, seeded with just five users. As of Feb 24, 2013, it has 155,946 users, who have generated 2,347,197 calls.

After SMSall (with current traffic of over 600 Million SMS per month), BitMate (used by over 51,000 users from 187 countries) and our Dengue early epidemic warning system (used by govt of punjab for tracking dengue in 2012), this is the foruth system from our research group that has had this kind of impact.

We are also planning to launch Polly in Africa soon.

Best regards,
