Re: [pakgrid] 12 World-Class Universities Join Coursera to provide online courses!

I would agree with Zafar.  I taught first course in algorithms to 4th semester students and followed Stanford lectures from coursera.  Analysis of some algorithms needed basic knowledge of probability.  Out put of algorithms was provably deterministic but execution time (like in simplex method for linear programming) was dependent upon input since at few steps random choices for pivots were made.  To my utter joy the class had taken a course in probability and it was really frustrating when they said that they intentionally took the course out of their memory.  I am taking stats 101 from prof Sebestian from Udacity.  I wish these students had taken the 6 week course from Udacity than the 17 week course in the university.

Similarly these students were taking an course in software engineering in parallel but were just hesitant to program.  Feedback from students was that the SE course is their sleep time.  I wish they has taken the 7 week SaaS course from none other than Davie Peterson from Berkeley.  I have not finished taking this course but the 3 weks that I have done were fascinating.

By the way I am 58 years old.

Dear all,

The article, indicated by  Shamyl, is from US point of view, where it is supposed that every professor is at least good enough.

In countries like Pakistan, we are really deficient in quality. We get degrees but we are not taught at par with the top universities. So these courses help a student to understand what he is lacking.
I have learnt a lot from these courses and was quite stunned to see the difference in standard of education of my university with international universities.

In short, these course have made it possible that a motivated student from a small Pakistani student to enter into Microsoft, Google you name it, provided that the student is motivated enough.

I would welcome the comments of respected group members on this topic.

thanks
Zafar

Dear Courserians,
We are THRILLED to announce that 12 universities -- including three international institutions -- will be joining Princeton University, Stanford University, University of Michigan, and University of Pennsylvania in offering classes on Coursera.
On Coursera, you will now be able to access world-class courses from:
You'll be able to choose from more than 100 new courses, from learning how to program in Scala (taught from the creator of Scala, Professor Martin Odersky from EPFL), to Professor Dan Ariely's course on irrational behavior, to the legendary UVA course "How Things Work" with Professor Louis Bloomfield. You can check out the most current course list here -- keep in mind you can enroll in a class even if the start date is to be announced.
To date, 700,000 students from 190 countries have participated in classes on Coursera, with more than 1.6 million course enrollments total!
To everyone who has taken a class on Coursera, or who has recommended us to your friends and family -- thank you! Education is starting to look very different, and we're excited and humbled to be part of it.
Very best,
