Re: [pakgrid] why 3.0 CGPA for PhD Admission

as if raising the bar on CGPA will guarantee 1% thinkers? ;-)

p.s. tell me where they live, I want to meet a thinker before the underarms turn grey ...

I see the problem with people demanding relaxed standards for PhD qualification.
Everyone wants to be PhD. Why? Because that is the top of the career ladder in academia. Being masters you just get 25K - 50K, but being PhD your salary gets 100K and above. And you have the power of authority. But think naturally, should every Masters graduate be encouraged to do a PhD? As if there is no other way to excel in your field?
Practically, its just the Bachelors graduate degree holders who contribute the most and excel in seniority in the industry. Just 4-6 years professional study and 12+ years practical industry experience.

The society does not need everyone as philosophers like Socrates. Thats why they dont allow all masters to be PhD. They want more practical men with their feet on the ground. Only 1% thinkers are enough. And even those only the clear-headed and useful in practical implementation.

Dear Friends,

HEC has already put this matter at the discretion of admitting university by issuing a notification that Admitting University shall approve some Pre-requisite courses for the students (with less than 3.00 CGPA) at the time of admissions for those who have remained somehow week in their Masters studies as to elevate the student knowledge level to cope with hard PhD studies coming ahead for him.

As far as course work is concerned, it is customary that Level of course work at PhD level is higher than Masters and undergraduate levels so that indepth knowledge of the subject can be provided to the candidate. However I agree to the point that relevent course work (PhD field/Area specific) should be there for the candidate and all irrelevant courses in the PhD Studies be omitted and the decision to this effect be made at the time of his admission in the university by his supervisor. I also recommend that exemption of 3.00 CGPA condition for PhD Admission for foreigen qualified Masters Degree holders be abolished as to treat all local and foreign students equally.

Quality vs Quantity argument has no ends. Simply put: we need both.

If the Supervisor is OK to take the student and University is OK to take the student even if he/she has CGPA<3.0 than HEC should have no objection. Admission of a student is at strictly University's discretion. HEC should focus on specifying the quality criterion of the research produced and ask the Universities to implement those criterion. What's wrong with that?

There is no guarantee of degree from MAJU without hard work, You have to earn it by yourself! PhD is not something that one register and get that degree paper after several years. One should and have to show something to be able to get degree.

As far as HEC is concerned I thing some rules regarding PhD need to be revised, primary focus or you can say all attention should be on research instead of Course work then comprehensive. 18 years of education are enough for course work. As for as admission is concerned every one who got 18 years of education should be given chance to compete for PhD.

Yes, its totally unfair. If a HEC recognised institute issues MS degree, then its right of the student to take admission in PhD.

Salam,

I hear that HEC has set up 3.0 CGPA requirement for admission in PhD, whereas the passing criteria for MS degree is 2.5.

If a person with fairly good academic record has not been able to secure a CGPA of 3.0 or above then he/she is deprived of getting admission in PhD.

Furthermore, students with equal CGPA from different universities have different calibre.

With this email, I would like to float a resolution, that the admission in PhD should be the discretion of a university rather than HEC, i.e. every person who has cleared MS should be able to get admission in PhD provided he/she fulfils the criterion of a particular university.

kind regards,
-adnan
