Re: [pakgrid] why 3.0 CGPA for PhD Admission: Comments with prior appologies

Dear All
With due apologies to all of my following comments in an ongoing discussion, these are my views and may hurt some one's feelings without my intentions to do so:

1. Phd is a very painful process of adding to knowledge of a subject through persistent handwork and devotion towards the area of  research. One virtually cries in this process so many times and asks Allah for His help in giving ideas which just dont come. And any ideas that come without having reviewed relevant literature are so old that probably they were researched a 100 years earlier. But since these ideas are coming to you so you thing its a Phd idea.

2. At the moment, the standard of Phd students even who fulfill 3.0 GPA condition of HEC is hopelessly low in Pakistan. I have seen students with 3.95 CGPA sending an article for publishing which should actually be unacceptable based on its poor English language write up, lack of technical content, being full of only past references and without any tangible results given in it.

3. I greatly admire HEC for having setup a condition of publishing one paper in ISI indexed Impact Factor journal.  Which most of the times becomes so much pain in ______ that Phd student is just unable to get through even with so high CGPA. I agree with this HEC Policy for publishing because a large body of researchers are doing Phd for being called a Dr. , gain the perks / promotions associated with this title and not to contribute to knowledge. Imagine if HEC did not have this condition for award of Phd, every Pakistani Academic would have been a Dr. after writing letters to Editors of News papers and considering these as their contribution to body of knowledge.

4. In early 40's over 55000 Phd's were coming out of USA universities with contributing to knowldege which was being taken by industry to develop products which we are using in our everyday life today and never even think how it came into being. Imagine if all Phd's coming from US universities than were only paper pushers and PPT presenters, we would not have been enjoying so much of technological gadgets in our daily lives today

5. Coming to a condition of 3.0 GPA, our Phd current students who have fulfilled this conditions are mostly struck up on even finding a research area for first few years of their being a Phd researcher. The reason is that our Academia and Industry is not working close enough due to a host of reasons. So the supervisors just donot have enough ideas to ask the students to work on. Ultimately everyone thinks that statistical analysis of data and use of statistical tools is what a Phd is all about. And based on these calculations which normally SPSS or E VIEWS of similar software does it for the researcher a new Frame work of some think is the knowledge contribution.  Well it is not and never would be.

6. This is the condition of above 3.0 GPA students, imagine what will happen if we had below 3.0 GPA students, they will think that probably milking a cow early morning and selling it or singing a song on FM 100 of a TV channel was all about doing a Phd

7. Huge number of Universities have become only money earning Machines with huge profits. Most of these are owned by people who might not be even graduates. So for them having more Phd students means more customers and more money. who cares what one does in Phd.

8. Dear Sirs, friends , students and everyone, thank Allah that you have HEC which is regulating some quality standards to be achieved by Universities, teachers and students. If it bows to your wishes, our Phd degree will be just as acceptable to the outside world as are degrees below it. The jobs you will get out side this country will be of bricklayers and masons only. And if you end up teaching in Pakistani Universities, you will produce graduates with only a certificate in their hands and hence will destroy our most valuable asset of young Human resource for lasting development of our country.

9. So for those with below 3.0 GPA, dont cry on standards rather put in your best to achieve these because these are meant to add value to yourself forcefully.

best regards

Quality vs Quantity argument has no ends. Simply put: we need both.

If the Supervisor is OK to take the student and University is OK to take the student even if he/she has CGPA<3.0 than HEC should have no objection. Admission of a student is at strictly University's discretion. HEC should focus on specifying the quality criterion of the research produced and ask the Universities to implement those criterion. What's wrong with that?

There is no guarantee of degree from MAJU without hard work, You have to earn it by yourself! PhD is not something that one register and get that degree paper after several years. One should and have to show something to be able to get degree.

As far as HEC is concerned I thing some rules regarding PhD need to be revised, primary focus or you can say all attention should be on research instead of Course work then comprehensive. 18 years of education are enough for course work. As for as admission is concerned every one who got 18 years of education should be given chance to compete for PhD.

Yes, its totally unfair. If a HEC recognised institute issues MS degree, then its right of the student to take admission in PhD.

Salam,

I hear that HEC has set up 3.0 CGPA requirement for admission in PhD, whereas the passing criteria for MS degree is 2.5.

If a person with fairly good academic record has not been able to secure a CGPA of 3.0 or above then he/she is deprived of getting admission in PhD.

Furthermore, students with equal CGPA from different universities have different calibre.

With this email, I would like to float a resolution, that the admission in PhD should be the discretion of a university rather than HEC, i.e. every person who has cleared MS should be able to get admission in PhD provided he/she fulfils the criterion of a particular university.

kind regards,
-adnan
