The Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI: http://www.qcri.qa/) conducts world-class applied computing research, creating knowledge and supporting innovation in select areas of computing science that will have long-term relevance and lasting value for Qatar. QCRI is looking to hire 3 scientists and 2-3 PostDocs over the course of the next 12 months in the Information Retrieval area.
Job Description:
Scientists and PostDocs are expected to contribute towards the research efforts of QCRI and to develop research expertise, tackling IR research challenges. The scientist will work as part of a research team, collaborating with peer researchers and software engineers to publish high quality papers, develop prototypes, and generate intellectual property in the form of disclosures and patent applications.
Qualifications:
• Ph.D. in Computer Science or related field with primary focus on information retrieval
• Strong publication record in tier 1 conferences and journals
• Expertise in related areas such as machine learning and/or natural language processing is preferred
• 1-3 years of research experience past Ph.D. for scientists
• Industrial and development experience would be a plus
Typically, we hire fresh Ph.D.'s as PostDocs with the prospect of switching to full time positions within 1 year. We can offer full time positions to truly exceptional fresh Ph.D.'s.

About QCRI's NLP/IR group:
Though our NLP/IR group is quite nascent (started with 1 scientist 1 year ago), we have grown to 13 people now. Overall, our research lab has grown from 4 people in Feb. 2011 to 60 people now in 4 major areas – NLP/IR, Data Analytics, Social Computing, and Cloud/Scientific Computing.
We are focused on conducting high quality research. We get graded on publishing in tier-1 conferences/journals, filing patents, and building prototypes. We have been successful on all these fronts with papers in most top conferences (ex. EMNLP, ECIR, ACL, EACL, TREC) and more than 24 patents in the last year. We have strong collaborations with local partners particularly Aljazeera, leading to a wealth of interesting resources and problems.
The QCRI NLP/IR research team members are:
• 1 Principal scientist: Stephan Vogel who was a research faculty at CMU
• 1 Senior scientist: Kareem Darwish who was a researcher at MSR in Cairo
• 2 Scientists: Wei Gao who joined us from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Preslav Nakov who did his Ph.D. at Berkley and PostDoc at the National University of Singapore
• 2 PostDocs: Francisco Guzman who finished his Ph.D. from Monterey and Walid Magdy who finished his Ph.D. from Dublin City University
• 2 Senior software engineers: Ahmed Ali and Safdar Kureishy who joined us from Nuance and Adobe respectively
• 5 Interns: 1 from CMU, 1 from Shanghai Jiaotong University and 3 from Cairo University
We hope to be one of the strongest (and biggest) IR/NLP groups within 2 years.
