If I were to contact Hughes and change modems, could I use SatTool to reconnect? If not, will Hughes let me go through the re-registration process without closing my account?

In my opinion, the odds that the modem is the problem are very slim.
What is the modem itself telling you when it isn't connecting? System Info?

It will then ask if you want to replace the modem. Just say yes and you should go through to the end and a restart.
After that you can go back to using DSSatTool.
If you call Hughes, they might send you too a VAR.

I have three spare modems three weeks and I checked them all out by
reregistering each one to determine if it worked and could be a spare. I
would not hesitate in the least to change out a modem IF I had a good
purpose. You do not have to go through Hughes to do change a modem. Bear
mind they don't support the traveler if that is what you do. I think their
solution is to upgrade you to the 9000 modem which isn't good for traveling
and set up. I get my Hughes service through a VAR who has been helpful to me
this last go round of checking equipment before departing for the summer. I
ended up having a bad cable and a bat transmit arm. Some very great folks on
this forum really came to my rescue.
I recall five years ago I had similar dropouts and then I couldn't get the
transmit light at all. It turned out to be a bad power supply. Swapping it
out fixed that problem!!!
