On behalf of Habib University, you are cordially invited to a panel discussion titled Beyond Bias and Barriers: Women of Pakistan in Science and Technology. The event will feature:
 
·         Jehan Ara, President of Pakistan Software Houses Association for IT & ITES (P@SHA)
·         Sheba Najmi, Code for America Fellow and former Yahoo! Mail Lead Designer
·         Nida R Farid, Entrepreneur, Project Manager and Renewable Energy Consultant
 
The session will be moderated by Dr. Nosheen Ali, Assistant Professor, School of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, Habib University.
 
Abstract
From Hypatia of Alexandria to scientist Marie Curie and computer programming pioneer Ada Lovelace, women have played a role in humanity's quest to explore the universe. Despite having faced monumental barriers in the realm of science and technology, globally women have made significant breakthroughs. Pakistan, too, has witnessed this altering landscape and the growth of female technologists and engineers.
 
As part of the Habib Lecture Series, this panel discussion aims to highlight the journey of three such Pakistani women who are pioneers in their own right. It will touch upon the issues, challenges, opportunities and trends in technology vis-à-vis women in Pakistan and the world.
 
The Panelists
Jehan Ara is President of Pakistan Software Houses Association for IT & ITES (P@SHA), and an acclaimed entrepreneur for IT and interactive New media. She is also a social activist, actively involved in development policy, research and does advocacy in the areas of internet freedom, and women's rights and empowerment
 
Code for America Fellow, Sheba Najmi is a social entrepreneur, user experience designer and product strategist. Sheba has earned MS and BS degrees in Symbolic Systems from Stanford University and currently is the Project Lead for Honolulu Answers, and Social Media Handbook for Cities. She has previously worked as a lead designer for Yahoo! Mail.
 
Nida Farid is a project management and engineering consultant for renewable energy and aerospace projects in the Middle East and South Asia. Nida has an SB in Aerospace Engineering from MIT, with an MS in Mechanical Engineering from ETH Zürich, and has done extensive work in aircraft manufacturing, wind energy and power segments, with recent emphasis on conservation of energy.
 
Lecture Details
The lecture will be held at 4:00pm on Friday, April 5, 2013 at Juhi Hall, Sheraton Hotel, Karachi. Please find details in the attached flyer.
