LUMS was started by corporate sector to provide business /management training to their executives and it was spearheaded by Syed Babar Ali. He managed to get corporate sector support due to his personal qualities and influence.
I am sure that these donations are tax-deductible for these industrial groups.
These groups are not donating any money to other premier institutions, public universities, medical colleges or engineering colleges. I am sure that many universities can contact their alumni if they know their whereabouts. Western countries use these contacts very effectively. Many well-off alumni leave millions in their wills for universities and research centres. If we all decide to help our former institutions then it will be a step in the right direction.

LUMS has significant donations by its alumni. (don't have not but some details here http://lums.edu.pk/giving/content/our-supporters-1409 ) Though NUST doesn't match it in numbers yet they still donate back to provide financial aid to NUST students. GIKI alumni also support students with financial need through alumni association. So we do have setups in place. They are just not mature enough yet and need your support.
I would counter Mr. Waqar sale email by saying that going by his logic one would pay no taxes either and that's what has lead to Pakistans fate today. Charitable giving is the way to secure future of your progeny. Help build institutions who care for people in need and they will insure you be taken care of at hard times. Money comes and goes..!

I make even a stronger statement, our smart, hardworking, intelligent youth makes it in 1st world in spite of our universities.

I had a very similar discussion earlier today. US universities give their students a lot more (of course they also charge a lot more) than most Pakistani universities; health services, dining, sports, bookstore, sports, transportation, tradition, etc. This leads to a deeper sense of belonging in the alumni.
Also, Western societies do not believe in pampering their children as much as us. Most of us, if we have money to give, will keep it safe for the progeny, rather than giving it for a charitable cause.

This is the amount of money my alma mater Syracuse University collected in its campaign targeting the alumni and their employers.
I wonder if any Pakistani University is thinking about or planning of contacting the alumni and requesting them for donations.
