Seriously considering dumping Hughes after 12 yrs. speeds are horrible
and service is basically non existent. Very tired of tolerating their
BS. Will start looking into various other options. Hard when home in
far northern Wisconsin where there is virtually NO cell service.

We dumped Hughes a long time ago. Using Verizon aircard. The 551L is OK it
will work with a router. I just had to replace it with a UML295. It is so
new that there are no routers that support it. I also do not like the way
it connects to the Internet. It uses a web page to connect.

If you don't have cell, and your location doesn't have wired options (DSL or cable), then satellite is your only option.

If this is a permanent location, you might look into one of the new vendors, like Exede (http://www.exede.com). I don't know if they do seasonal plans or not.

It still depends on where you camp and how much internet bandwidth you use. Satellite comes with daily (Hughes), weekly (Starband) and Monthly (about everyone else) limits. Hit those and they slow you down, a lot. Cell phone/aircard plans come with monthly limits, but when you hit them normally they just charge you more, with some plans a lot more. If you are not hitting your limits with satellite then you are not a heavy user and you probably won't hit them with cell phone. But we have friends who are always being FAPed (Hughes name for when you hit the daily limit) and know other friends who use 20 to 30GB per month on cellular internet since they have grandfathered unlimited plans.

Verizon is slow to non-existent a couple places we camp so we supplement with a prepaid provider on Sprint, but AT&T would be better. But there are places we go where AT&T is non-existent or slow, a few more than Verizon.

There is not one size fits all. If you are happy, your buddy might not be since they travel in different places and/or use more internet than you do. There are still people who need satellite internet.

Bill
